What capacitors ofr Gibson SG?
« on: March 10, 2007, 02:44:45 PM »
Hi Guys,

I'm completely overhalling the electronics in my SG & was wondering if someone could clarify what capacitors I should to use.

I read on some random website I should use 0.047 for the neck pup, & 0.022 for the bridge.
I've opened up my guitar and both the bridge & neck caps are 0.022uF.  Are there any SG owners out there who can let me know which is correct?
I was going to go for Orange Drops as a replacement.  Good choice?

Thanks!

.047mfd caps cut highs quicker whereas .022mfd caps are a little more restrained and possibly easier to dial in tonally.I personally prefer .022mfds and would recommend the Vitamin Q oil and paper cap as it sounds great.

I've got 0.022 Hovland MusiCaps in my SG.  Sounds great to me, and everyone else who's played it  :D

They cost about £15 each don't they?  Are they really worth that amount of money?

get some NOS Sprague 0.022uF caps off ebay - should run you around £30 inc shipping from the US (99% of them are in the US as they were a US-made cap).  these are the same covetted caps as the 'bumblebee' ones but without the paint job.

I have these in my Les Paul and even I noticed the difference as a cap sceptic.

For humbuckers I like 0.022uF, for single coils I like 0.047uF

Depends.  I used regular Orange Drops before and I think the tone is smoother withthe Hovlands.  Small difference, is it worth £10 or so a cap?  I guess so for my main gigging SG and Les Paul - wouldn't bother with every guitar though.

I bought a couple of Hovland Musicaps for my Guild S-100 and went for a 0.022 for the bridge and 0.015 for the neck.

Maybe I'm a little late, but I replaced the tone pots on my SG as well when I put the Miracle Man in.

Neck: Tone 1Megohm pot (Gibson 490 or whatever it's called)
Bridge: (new) 500Kohm pot (BK Miracle Man)

That really gave new life to the neck humbucker. I like it much more now, I suspect the tone pot before was 300Kohm or something like that. The top end has like a whole new dimension to it now.

The Miracle Man is great too, of course!
