String changes on a SG?
« on: April 02, 2007, 03:38:11 PM »
Hello peeps.

After splurging all over a new tele over christmas (during exam leave too, bad choice) I have whipped my SG out for a fumble.

Alas the strings are so very ratty, my question is thus. Will changing up from a set of 10s up to 11s do any damage? I know SG are renowned for having weak necks, and I don't particularly want to snap this one in two.

Any change of action etc i can fix myself, just don't want my pretty neck snapping like the spine of a hooker that pissed off superman.

NOW YOU TELL ME!

I have 13-56 on my SG atm, thank god it's tuned to Drop A#...

I've never heard of rattly 10s on an SG though, maybe you're reating the symptons and not the cause?

Do it! I play 11 - 52 on all my guitars tuned as standard. . Remember a gibson is a shorter scale too so 11's might feel to you more like the tension of 10's on your tele.

An SG shouldn't have any problems with 11's. You might have to file the nut slots out a bit.

If you break your headstock or neck because of 11's, you've bought the lemon of the century.

theyre weak in the respect that if you drop it (or it falls over) theres a fair chance of decapatation.

However the Sg was designed in the days before 10s (or for that matter 11s)

I have a friend who used to set up his Gibson Faded SG with 11's and it was fine. Given it was hard as shite to bend on but it still worked.

I think he said that the 10s were RATTY (as in worn/rusty) rather than rattly(as in buzzing)

11s will be fine on the SG
You will need to tweak the truss rod, adjust the nut slots and adjust the intonation a bit perhaps, but the guitar will be fine

Cool, just wanted to make sure I don't kill her.

I play 11's on my tele anyway, anything less feels really girly to me.

Plus this was a good way to jump back into the BKP forum. No warm welcome? No hugs and kisses?
