MQ90 match

i've got a Mississippi Queen stuck in the neck of my LP Standard and i love it, absolutely blinding pickup. problem is this; i find that the Mule sitting in the bridge lacks punch compared with the p90 (maybe this is dodgy soldering on my part, i'm not sure) and there is a definite volume sag when i switch from the neck to the bridge. i like the tone of the Mule but i want something a bit more; maybe a VHII (i love the tone coming from that soundclip in the forum) or a Black Dog?

i'd appreciate some input! cheers!

Welcome to the forum  :)

Have you adjusted the height of the pickup from the strings?  And made sure the polepieces are all the same distance away?  Try the Mule at 2mm from the strings with them fretted at the last fret.  For the neck MQ, drop it down a bit until they balance - try 3mm to start and raise it if it's then too quiet.

yeh defs try what twinfan mentioned

and if you are still thinking of changing it to a black dog, have a butchers at the players section for my clips (i have a BD/MQ combo in my LP)

if there are any specific clips you want lemme know (might be able to do them, depends how many strings they require   )

I know the problem you are having.  MQ's have a huge output especially in the neck.  I have mine with a Warpig bridge!  If you really want the traditional tone but with more power, I would look at the Crawler or Emerald.  I'm not sure that a VHII or Black Dog will be powerful enough.  What magnet do you have in the Mule?
So many pickups, so little time

the MQ is as low as possible and the Mule is almost touching the strings!

i've only got the standard magnets in the Mule, Alnico IV i think? i checked out those Black Dog sound clips and they're awesome; what would Black Dogs with ceramics be like?

not good

most of the sound of the black dogs comes from the alnico magnet, especially the great mid-range hump... ceramics would smooth the sound out and give it faaaaar too much power... although i'm not a metalhead like most people on this forum, so i'm sure a lot of people will now complain that there is no such thing as too much power...

but anyways, i wouldn't recommend a ceramic black dog... although look up the RYs if you want something with some more punch... or a Cold sweat if you want ceramics

Cheers

If the mules that close then it may be sounding thinner than it can. It'll be hotter and more compressed there. Back it off to a more medium height and lift the gain on the amp and you may find that it gives it a bigger sound that competes with the MQ better.

i'll have a go at adjusting the height of the Mule again, see if that makes a difference!

just read the review posted about the Cold Sweats and they sound pretty impressive, i might check them out.

cheers for the input guys!
