Yet another 'what pickup?' thread
« on: May 11, 2007, 04:28:39 PM »
Hi guys!

I have been looking at bare knuckles since i first heard about them and i have just acquired a guitar that will be worthy of them.

My PRS CE22 cost me £450 (a steal if i may say so myself) in brand new condition. Pic below:

There is a guitar luthier who lives locally (who is quite famous apparently :D) who has given me a quote for setting up my guitar (it could do with one professionally really, I'm alright but no pro) and installing the pickups. I would do them myself too but the 5 way rotary switch looks like it could be a biatch to do.

I have been in contact with Tim and he has recommended to me the Crawlers and the Nailbomb pickups for my styles, I don't really want to bother him as I'm sure he has lots of things to do :).

My musical influences include Tool, Led Zep, Rage Against The Machine, Joe Satriani, Hendrix and Rush. I was thinking I get maybe put a Nailbomb in the bridge for Tool, Rage n Satch and heavier stuff and have a Crawler in the neck for Led Zep, Rush. Will this be a bad plan? Another question would be what would look best I'm my machine? Covered ones as they are or open coils (zebra or black)?

My amp is a ENGL Screamer 50 with a Framus 212 V30 loaded cab and my effects are an army soon to amass, once i have the money after this upgrade.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice you can give.

i agree with the nailbomb bridge and crawler neck

i would personally get black covered pickups as they would compliment the guitar well

or if you dont want it to look so "NEW"

id get the nailbomb engraved cover and ask tim to make one for the crawler too

that would look awesome imho

It depends a bit on your taste.

Crawlers have more of a PAF thing going and Nailbombs are more metal minded. They're both pretty hot. I do have to say that Crawlers can do an excellent RATM.

Listen to some clips of both before you decide.

As for covers, I'd go for aged nickel on that guitar.

Thanks guys!

I dont like the look of the aged stuff, i'de prefer to age it myself :-D if at all.

I dont want to go ott on it either (camo pickups? no thanks!)

Would you think the crawlers could do Tool aswell? Or would the nailbomb be better suited?

i think nailbomb is a little too hot and sharp for what you're looking for
i'd go with a HD or even a bridge crawler

Crawlers can do Tool. They get very doomy and gloomy when tuned down.

Nice guitar!  :)  How does everyone but me keep finding these crazy bargains?!

That was the main point of my post really, but while I'm here I think the Crawlers would probably be well suited to the more old-school stuff you're into.

And nickel covers!

I was thinking about it the other day and I was wondering if replacing my Dragon IIs will make the sound any better on my guitar or not?

I was talking to the guy I work with about it and he infromed me that people often buy Dragon IIs to put in their guitars...

Whether it'll sound "better" or not is, of course, a matter of personal opinion.

The question is: are you unhappy with the sound of the guitar?  If not, don't change the pickups.

Nice guitar!

I'd go with nickel covers.

I stole my LP Standard for $800/404 pounds.

I have aged nickel covers in my Classic but I'm going with regular nickel covers for my Standard.
