What is a baritone? I keep hearing about them, but I have no idea what one is.

A baritone is a guitar with a larger scale. 29.25 inches.

It allows you to play in C, B or A tuning without having to use telephone poles for strings.

would it work in D standard?

It would work. Just as you could tune a regular guitar to G standard. It would put more tension on the strings.

For D standard I think I would prefer a Fender scaled guitar (25.5 ") with 11's.
