Suggestions for an RG550
« on: May 25, 2007, 02:03:41 PM »
I am getting (eventually) a couple of the new Ibanez RG550 re-issues (basswood with maple neck), I am definitely going to change the pickups in 1 of them to give it a different voice.

I am pretty much sold on the idea of a set of Holy Divers if the stock pickups are not to my taste, I am going for a kind of smooth shreddy instrumental lead tone with a lot of mids and crunch.

For the 2nd one I am leaning towards a smooth blusy tone from the neck with good versatility from the bridge, in pole position is the Mule but am considering the VHII as well.

I have a Rebel Yell / Cold Sweat in my Les Paul which I love so would prefer something different for the RG’s.

I should probably say that in my limited experience I prefer Alnico’s but that should be take with a pinch of salt because the only ceramic I have had were Evolutions which I hated. I seem to be leaning more towards tone and cut than out and out power these days.

Opinions welcome. Thanks

Holy Divers for sure. Crazy_Joe and myself have them in our RG's and going by what we've both said, they sound amazing.

thanks for the replys,

I think the nail bomb may be a bit hot for what I am looking for, I have an EMG loaded Washburn to take care of the real heavy stuff. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Do you mean one of these?  8)

Number 1265.... Remember to register yours on www.rg20th.com !!!

Its a real shame BKP dont come in the crazy 80's colours to match the guitars. Im looking for more of a 80's Hair Metal sound so im guessing VHII's would be good for me. Would like a nice bit of shred as well. I guess an Early Vai tone.

Out of intrest what ones did you order? DY and a RFR?

yep, got a dy and rfr on order.

I agree it's a bit of a shame about the limited colour options on BKP's. I am thinking about reverse zebra for the dy and will probably just stick with black for the rfr.
