Help locating an exotic acoustic bridge
« on: May 28, 2007, 07:10:59 PM »
Hey, I recently purchased an acoustic with a broken bridge (snapped and pulling off the face of the guitar, but no wood damage to the actual guitar) and I want to find a replacement out of something like paduak or macassar ebony. Do you guys know of any places that sell such a thing, or is it all just plain rosewood or ebony?

thanks

Most premade bridges are rosewod and ebony - if you are willing to make your own you can make it out of anything[/url]

I wouldnt know how to make it. I was hoping there was a builder online or a shop that could do it based on their own templates and you just choose whatever wood you want.

If you have some woodworking skills (filing, sanding, cutting, drilling), i'm sure you could do it yourself- getting a piece of timber that you could use wouldn't cost too much i wouldn't think.

You could give these a try. They're not that exotic, but will likely be good quality for relatively little outlay.

Thanks. I was hoping there was something out there a little more ornate, but at least they'll work.  Im surprised with all the custom guitar parts in the world that this seems to be an area where you pretty much cant find that much diversity or customization.

You are possibly looking for one to be custom made (& fitted)
You don't say where you are located

Seeking out a good guitar maker in your area will get the result

Can be time consuming to make and slot and fit the saddle
You may pay over £50 for a handmade one

Im in New York.  I have a great guitar tech that works on all my stuff. http://newyorkguitarrepair.com, so he would install it for me. But he doesn't make them. I just thought I could order one and specify the wood and if I wanted inlay etc.  Its a shame that doesn't exist. A person can get a cabinet made out of any wood, with any fabric, you can get tuners with all kinds of wood buttons, you can get pickguards in every color, ply layer, and material under the sun. But if you want to order an acoustic bridge, your stuck with stewmac haha

argh

No - the USA is full of great guitar makers who would be only too happy to do that for you.
You just have to find one - in your state  or the whole of East Coast or New England - there are lots of them.
Chances are they will be more likely to be found on an acoustic guitar forum, rather than a pickup forum.

I have made replacement bridges myself but with the exchange rate being what it is you may be better off finding a local luthier

Or do a search on google or where ever

I wrote a couple of local luthiers but so far only one responded (http://www.customguitars.com)  with a quote of $325 which is wayyyy out of my budget for this.  I thought it would be about $60 bucks or so.
