If you have £1000 to spend on a valve head, there are only four recommendations...

Matamp King Street Major
Matamp 1224
Matamp LX
Matamp GT1

All have tone, all are hand built, and all of them are superb amps.

Bibble.
BKP's: Black Dog set, Emerald set, & Crawler set.

I'd say the Cornford.. they're amazing cranked one of the most articulate and sweet sounding amps in the world I'd have one in an instant.. If I didn't already have a Splawn. which is also a consideration but the wait is killer.

try out some HiWatts,

I play metal, really extreme metal and i've used them in my backline and they are absolutely superb at everything. The HighGains can really shred.

Check out their 50 watt heads.

Wow I've never really associated HiWatts with metal?

If I were buying an amp I'd always look to buy from a UK based manufacturer (support our great nation) and at this moment in time you cannot better the quality and pure tone from www.matamp.co.uk

Two years ago I would have recommended Marshall, but at the moment I honestly cannot say they are doing anything right...Its quite sad to say that, as I really liked their customer serviced when they repaired my poor AVT.

Tip of the day: buy my VHT 50ST
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7751

Yesterday I was able to crank it up at a rehearsal place after I slightly adjusted the bias with my newly acquired bias rite.

Awesome tone for the money, not quite the body and depth of the Bogner Shiva, but a damn nice crunch and big bottom end. And when we pushed it with a tube screamer using the low input, it became really tight and evil.

I'd check out the Matamps and Confords too. You mentioned Koch, they do one called the classic tone, 40 watts but its a 4 x 10 combo so you would have to be built like goliath to hump it about! www.koch-amps.com
Warpig, MQ,
Miracle Man-Trilogy Suite, Cold Sweats, Black Guards, Rebel Yells & Irish Tours!

You should try a Marshall DSL 50.
I think it can fullfill your hopes, considering the bands you're listening to
