Some More Amp Help
« on: May 30, 2007, 09:07:52 PM »
I was wondering if you guys could give me some more advice regarding amps and stuff-

I've been looking at this head:
Crate GT3500 Guitar Head:
http://www.soundcontrol.co.uk/mod_1/pages/mod_1.12/pages/mod_1.12.1/pages/mod_1.12.1.1/pages/index.php?sku=1.1.1.3.1.2-109-7269#

And this cabinet:
Behringer BG412S
http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_bg412s_ultrastack.htm

Now, my question is- will these two actually work together?  I know very little technical stuff :D  As far as I can tell, they would- the head has an output power of 350W (maximum, I think) and the cabinet can apparently take 400W in 8ohm Mono and 2x200W in 8-12ohm stereo...

That means very little to me, but going on numbers, I'm assuming that since the cab can take 400W and the head can give 350W, they'll work together.  Advice would be very useful- I'm looking to build up some cash over the holidays so I can purchase this combo when I head back to Sheffield to commence the arse-kicking gigness ^_^

Thanks!

I would imagine that they'd work ok together, but have you heard that head in action?  I haven't, but I look at that head & cab and think "tranny head into MDF cab".  It could be tone heaven or it could be just a very loud amp.  :?

I'd stay away from those Behringer cabs, dubious quality and cr@p speakers - one of these Framus 2x12s would be money MUCH more wisely spent...  http://www.thomann.de/gb/framus_fr212_cb.htm

As for the Crate head, don't know much about Crate except their poor reputation for build quality.  The tranny Laney stuff I've tried has always been very solid and sounded spot on - the older 'world series' heads are crackin amps and you would most likely pick one up on ebay for £150 tops.

The Kustom tranny heads are also great and worth looking at.

'Tranny'? o_O

And gods damn it, it's all so complicated... and expensive...

Some searching on Ebay yielded this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280119755789&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:middle:uk

Which I've heard some very good things about, and which is in Sheffield (even better).  If I were to get that and a Framus FR212, they'd go together well?  I'm pretty sure someone's recommended that combo to me before, although it would set me back 600 quid...

Yeesh.  Job needed, I think. :D

I agree. and based on one of the crate ss heads i tried a while back (can't remember the model, i think it was the 3500, though), i'm willing to bet it's not going to be tone heaven... unless you like bees, perhaps.

EDIT: do you need a stack? i don't know about you, but i'd rather have a nice combo than a not-so-good stack... with what that crate is liable to end up at, you're surely within range of the laney vc30 or similar... depends on the music you want to play, of course.

Tranny = Transistor or one should say Solid State.

For distortion sounds think bees in a jam jar (for the majority of amps)

Well, I had a play on that Crate head when I was in the shop today, and yeah... while it's got a really, really nice clean tone the distortion was a bit wank.  I could always put a distortion pedal through it, but meh.  Ideally it should have a nice distortion on it's own.

When I get back home I'll see if Sounds Great Music has got a Laney GH50L or some nice Laney combos and I'll have a play around.

the GH50s are crackin amps, can't go wrong for that kind of cash - keep your eyes peeled and you'll get one for somewhere between £200-300 used on ebay.  get the Framus 2x12 (or used Marshall/Laney cab on ebay) and you'll be good to go.
