slow soloing - miracle man vs nailbomb vs the mule

this is not exactly a shootout...
here are three (very) small clips based on a slow arpeggio (neck), an overdriven solo tone (neck) and a dirty solo tone (bridge).
MMs behaved better than i expected, and curiosly enough the sound i like less comes from the mules! they have a blues-rock dirtier tone that works a little worse on this kind of things, at least IMO...
my favourites are the Nailbombs, and this is no surprise. i think they are the best for soloing...

The NB is a lot trebly-er than I expected (in a good way)... is that typical of it's sound, or...?

neck nailbomb is the brightest BKP in its category. or at least the clearer...
bridge nailbomb has got a very nice combination of hi-mids and singing highs, but doesn't lack a balanced low end too. i prefer other pickups for rhythm work, but it's my favourite for solos!

I've been playing with the idea of saving for a replacement neck pickup, got a stock Ducan Designed Jazz in there now and while I like the tonal qualities, it's not keeping up with the Painkiller in the bridge! :lol: The Nailbomb seems to be closest to a Jazz, based on your clips, but the more I listen, the PK neck might be a better pairing (which would make sense!).

What do you think>

the Jazz is surely the closest pickup to the NB neck. while not a weak pickup (i'm talking about SD jazz, not duncan designed, though) it's weaker than the nailbomb.
i love the neck painkiller and i think it couples perfectly with its bridge brother, but a PK-NB mixed set is one of the things i would consider if i had a smaller choice of guitars!

The Mule sounds amazing, actually thought the N/B was the weakest of the bunch, maybe it was the style of what were playing? Some great phrasing there as well.

I preferred the MM first bit and the Mule second solo but all were very tastefully done.

I nearly convinced myself there was anything better then TM for me  :(

Anyway, the MM surprised me but listening to the clip that is probably you favorite PU of these three at that time, NB seems in the wrong guitar IMVHO.

uhm... i just got MMs so it was the novelty at the time, and i was testing them... NBs sound perfect (IMO!) in that guitar, but maybe i was just less dynamic in my playing... this shootout stuff is fun but can be boring at times...
anyway i was surprised too, MM neck sounds very sweet and lively, and everyone keeps saying that MMs have got the worst cleans in the whole BKP range... maybe they refer to the bridge unit (that for sure doesn't shine, but few bridge pickups do, actually!)

Hmm yes ok im guesstimating based on what i hear, true. I would picture the NB more in a darker mahagony guitar, obviously that would change the mids considerably but anyway. Note i was thinking aloud rather then thinking about how to make a politically correct answer :headphones5:
