Thinking about getting my Powertrons scatterwound
« on: June 20, 2007, 04:07:41 PM »
Most of you will know my Gretsch Power Jet. It's an outstanding guitar and is currently my number one. Everything on this guitar is top quality including the pickups.

The pickups are TV Jones Powertrons. They feature taller bobbins wich gives them more output and better midrange. They sound like a very beefy Filtertron. More PAF-ish but with that typical gretschy twang and kerrang and even more of that characteristic growl. This means they can do the classic rockabilly thing but also some serious hard rock.

Still, I think there's room for improvement. They can sound a bit clinical, cold, dull and there's a hint of harshness in the mids. So I'm thinking about having them scatterwound for better dynamics, harmonics etc.

Now, what I said above doesn't mean they're bad pickups. Au contraire. These are some of the best in the business. I certainly don't want to change the character of these wonderfull pickups.

Okay, here come the questions:

1. How long does it take? Including shipping.
2. Will they need re-waxpotting and is that included in the rewind price?

BTW. while the pickups are away, I will subject the guitar to Mozart for  24hrs a day to give the wood better tone.

It's gonna be a tone monster.

i was wondering about this as i LOVE the stock neck pickup on my agile but just wish it could be a little more alive and maybe a bit hotter.

Also what does it cost?

Oh, and one more question. Do I want  asymmetrically wound coils?

What are the pros and cons?

If the coils are asymmetrically wound they "hear" different frequencies so you get a slightly more open sound with more exaggerated highs and lows - a bit more single-coil like, in effect.

The downside is that the pickup's hum-cancelling ability is slightly compromised, doesn't make a huge difference though.

They'd definitely need repotting, unless you intentionally choose to go unpotted.

I thought TV Jones were considered the best Gretsch-type pickups out there - Tim doesn't offer any pickups like that so I'd imagine he has limited experience with them (????).

I'd talk it through with Tim and discuss what you realistically expect to achieve by having them rewound.

That's a fair comment.  Is it really going to be worth the hassle?  They might sound worse...

I think Tim rewound a couple of Filtertrons before.

There's a guy on the Gretschpages who had his Filtertrons scatterwound by Curtis Novak and it made quite a difference.

I doubt a quality scatterwind would make any passive pickup sound worse.
