Also, making a logo to look a bit like another maker's logo just makes the whole guitar look a cheap knock-off.  Far better IMO to have a simple block Legra logo that couldn't be mistaken for anything else or not have a logo at all. JMO, YMMV etc...

Yeah, but (I'm guessing) Woogie wants his guitar to look as Jake-ish as possible.  And good point about the IP infringement, but I don't think it'll be too risky with a one-off guitar.  Probably "safer" than using a real Charvel logo, at least?

I think Tom's Charvel-like logo is more like an affectionate little tribute, like Greco Super Real or Tokai Love Rock.

Anyway, I wonder what Bob thinks?

Certainly not arguing this point. The singer in my band works in IP law, and I can tell you that it's very much a hot topic in this day and age, and people will go through whatever hoops necessary to protect their identity. And that goes beyond companies battling it out, but sometimes well meaning people are crucified by companies just to set an example ...

Exactly. I`ve always loved the Charvel logo so I think this would be cool. Also it stays close to Jake's.

as players/hobbyists you can get away with putting any logo you want on a guitar as long as its for personal use.  If you ever try and sell it, even if you are not making any profit, you will be breaking the law and need to be very carefull.  Especially if its on Ebay - the companies are keeping a close eye on that one.

this is an issue that comes up quite often over at project guitar, they evn have a 12 page thread on it:

Personally i have never got the urge to put anyone elses logo's onto one of my guitars, why the hell would i want to!!!

YES - This is a real hot potato in the industry as TO points out.
We get asked often if we will make a guitar with another makers logo on and my answer is always NO

We will make a guitar with NO logo but will not fake someone else's (what a customer choses to do afterwards is up to them)

We are also proud of the guitars that we make and want to label them as Feline, and would hope that people coming to us would want to do that too.

It's interesting what we went through years ago when we were getting established - we used a script type logo back then and constantly had trouble with people saying that we were trying to look like Fender-

Problem was/is that we have a 6 letter name starting with an F and containing two letter Es and with a tall letter in the middle

Feline= Fender ???

So back then I deliberately chose a lower case typeface in a squarer style which seemed to work well on certain guitar types, but not so well on others.
In fact we took quite a pasting in a few reviews and from some players  who didn't like the logo. Once our cats-eye logo started to get more well known we got requests to utilise that instead and we rather liked that approach. For some players it was instantly recognisable, which is kinda cool

But for some vintage styled guitars it still wasn't quite right and we went back to using a script logo and to hell with folks who said it looks a bit Fender-esque. In some ways it's similar to Suhr and Pensa guitars in the look , but quite like it. I feel it will evolve a bit more, but for now it is good.
Works on Les Pauls too....

Anyway - baack on subject - I would vote for a Legra logo
Show support for the guy who put a lot of love into making the guitar, and when he is famous you will have an early(ish) example of his work

I do think that the Charvel logo is one of the coolest things ever though!

i agree with the guys saying to tread carefully, I'd just put a legra logo on it.

It's your guitar, though, and up to you, obviously.

Personally I'm not too happy about having my work portrayed as someone elses and like Jonathan will not under any circumstances fit another guitar makers logo. Apart from it being illegal I certainly wouldn't want my logo to appear on something I hadn't made. If I'm asked not to apply a logo at all that's disapointing but fair enough; it's all about being totally custom and the customer should always get what he wants.
