P-90s - they're clear-yet-dirty awesome!
« on: July 01, 2007, 11:31:26 PM »
Just fitted my new unpotted Alnico II P-90s to my recently purchased Les Paul Junior Lite.

Wow!  What a superb tone!  That great clean-yet-dirty pop-rock tone that just oozes chunky rhythm parts which is nice and full, yet superbly balanced.  I already have a Mississippi Queen in another guitar and great as it is, I feel it's a bit "hot" for some things.  The P-90s are much softer and a great addition to the family.  I have a feeling I'll be banging out plenty of tunes on them tomorrow after work  :D

Cheers Tim and the boys!

Excellent, I love the tone of P90's.A mate of mine has a Tele with them it and it has to be one of the greatest sounding guitars I have heard so I know where you are coming from.

Been on holiday for 10 days so I'm just catching up and reading the thread about your Junior Lite Dave.  Seems like everyone's been spendin'!

I remember that discussion where you'd fallen slightly out of love with the MQ - is that why you went for AII?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Hi Phil - nice to see you back!

Yeah, I wanted a more vintage-y tone which the basic P-90 does superbly.  It's everything I expected a P-90 to be - full, clean-yet-dirty and low output.  I've just been playing it back to back with my MQ guitar and it breaks down like this:

MQ (Alnico V, medium-hot wind) = Black Sabbath
P-90 (Alnico II, cool wind) = The Who

The Junior Lite is a superb guitar and I can't believe I got it so cheap!  A total keeper now it's been P-90'd  :D  The MQ has now been dialled in a bit better and I like it a lot more.  It seems to love my Little Rock!

Glad they sound good in the Jnr.........I must admit yours was the first request for unpotted P90s we've had, usually it's 'please make sure they're potted' so it's nice to know they're working well.

Thanks Tim!  Not a problem with them for home use, I haven't tried them at gig volume.

By the way, the cover on the bridge pickup came loose as I was adjusting the polepiece heights.  Do I need to worry about it?

if its a loose metal cover on a humbucker - a plastic cover on a p-90 or single coil isnt going to

They only push on so it's not a problem. You won't get microphonoics from a plastic cover anyway as there's plenty of space for the air to escape.
