War pig neck?
« on: July 11, 2007, 04:12:58 AM »
Hey. This is my first post on this forum although I've been lurking for a while.

Anyway, I ordered a calibrated set of Bare KnNuckle Warpigs last week (ceramic bridge, alnico V neck) and can't wait to get them into my new guitar (ESP SV Standard).

I chose the warpigs because I play metal and am kind of sick of using EMG's. I don't mind the EMG's in my les Paul but don't really like them in brighter sounding guitars such as the ESP SV. It kind of accentuates all the qualities I don't like about the EMG 81 if you know what I mean.

So Warpigs here I come.

I've been reading more threads etc. and have got to say that I'm a bit concerned about my choice to get the alnico Warpig neck pickup. There aren't really any clips of them in action doing solos (sweeps, tapping etc.)

I'm really hoping it will be work well with my guitar and produce a good neck lead tone, good for sweeps, tapping etc.

I chose to get the neck warpig becasue I wanted it to match the bridge pickup in output etc. Kind of like my current EMG 81/85 combo does (in that the 85 is still a very high output pickup). Tim offered me some advice, saying that the warpig neck would match the bridge really well going from and ahhh sound on the bridge to an ohhh sound on the neck without any loss in gain etc. He also mentioned that I should consider the cold sweat and nail bomb necks. I looked into these but decided to stick with the matching warpig. I'm assuming that if he said it would 'match really well' with the bridge warpig then it should perform well for leads.

So can anyone with a calibrated warpig set comment, or perhaps provide some clips of the neck pickup. there are plenty of clips for the bridge chugging away but not many of the necks in action, soloing, shredding etc.

here is a rough photoshopped image of my guitar with warpigs installed (it's not actualy my guitar in this image, mine is left handed).

Cheers.

i own the warpig set, although mine are both alnico. i am telling you, with these pickups, you can do all the stuff you used to do on the neck on the bridge. the warpig neck allows for awesome cleans and really melodic leads, and you could shred it if you wanted, but the bridge does that just fine. here, this clip was done all on the bridge. the chain is

Custom Flying V W/Warpigs > Ibanez Weeping Demon Wha > B-52 AT-100 Head (jj tubes) & matching cab. recording gear used is Audix i-5 dynamic mic and presonus firebox, Cubase SL 3 recording program. i delayed the left and right channels a bit to kind of get a sweeping delay, so if you want to hear the solid mono clip just pan to one side or the other.

EDIT: I TAKE THAT BACK, UPON LISTENING I SWITCHED TO THE NECK AT 45 SECONDS.

Have you thought of buying 500k pots to go with the pigs? because EMG pots won't work.

actually, they work, but terribly
a stupid luthier installed a set of duncans in my les paul and left the emg pots
sounded horrible, as it killed all the sustain and made the pickups sound extremely muddy, dark and totally toneless

yeah. I'm aware of that. Man, I'm suprised a luthier would make such a mistake. Then again, I've also had some pretty ordinary experiences with people working in music shops.

I'll have them installed professionally when I get them in. I'll definatley be throwing in some 500k pots.

Cheers.

Afraid I can't provide any clips as I have no way of recording at the moment, but I've got an all-Alnico V Warpig set in a Warmoth Soloist (and they were previously in an ESP M302), and I can tell you that the neck pickup is fantastic - the best neck pickup for lead work I have ever played, it keeps everything really nicely defined, but still with the smoothness you'd associate with a neck pickup. Great for rhythym work too.
Warpigs.

Hey dude, i'm using the same set up (ceramic piggy in bridge alnico in neck.)

All i can say is you wont be disapointed.

I used the set up on the two new recordings on our myspace (in pain and prepare for war) although i can't remember if i used the neck pick up for any of the solos.

If i can get my guitar port to work again i might be able to do some clips although my guitar has just been shipped off the venu for the gig tonight so it woudn't be untill tomorrow that i could have a go at it.
