New cab with G12Hs being picked up tomorrow...
« on: July 10, 2007, 01:50:16 PM »
I've just scored a slightly tatty Marshall 1936 2x12 off eBay fitted with brand new Celestion G12Hs for £120 - I think that's got to be a bargain?  It's been wired up to run at 16ohms just like my current Marshall 1936 2x12 with Celestion Vintage 30s.

I've been thinking about trying some other speakers for a little while, and this seemed too good an opportunity to pass up.  I tried a G12H at the Matamp factory and I preferred the clarity and focus of the Vintage 30 at the time, but I'm thinking with my Little Rock at home the G12Hs will sound really full and meaty

Comparisons will be forthcoming - watch this space tomorrow evening  ;)

Sounds good.  You will have to let us know which speakers get the most out of the little rock i am looking forward to getting mine - the money went from my bank account today so i am hoping its not too far off.

I was a bit daft recently, i sold a 70's vox ac30ss which had greenbacks in it and i really wish i had swapped the speakers out before i sold the amp - i didnt get much for it anyway so i really regret letting the old greenbacks go.

oh i posted a link to your sound samples on the Matamp forum - hope thats ok

That is indeed a bargain, even if you punt the cab and keep the drivers.

Can you get both cabs going with the Little Rock?

Not quite, as I can get new speakers for £80-ish.  £40 for an empty 1936 isn't too shabby a deal though  ;)

+1, the speakers separately are liable to set you back £100.

Collection only is the reason it hadn't been snapped up, plus the seller wanted a quick sale.  All adds up to a bargain price for me, and he's only a 45min drive away  :D

I like the Vintage 30 and the G12H30 the H30 is brighter but ballsier.. I've got a Cab loaded with H30s and my Cornford uses V30.. I prefer the V30 on the cornford and the H30 on the Splawn..

Cheers James.  I've a feeling my Les Pauls and Strats will like the G12Hs and my P-90s will prefer the V30s...

btw, G12H30s take some serious breaking in!
So don't be too put off by the first time you hear the cab it'll warm up tonnes after about a month or two worth of playing, but it's 2nd hand so that might not be an issue at all.

Cab update:

Well I picked it up earlier this evening and it's exactly what the guy said it was, whcih is a good start.  BRAND NEW Celestion G12Hs in it - I've just had to break them in  :o

Verdict?  They're a cross between a Greenback and Vintage 30 as I expected!  They're still new obviously, but they have a lot of the definition of the V30 but the extra low-mids and bass of a Greenback.  The tone is a bit fuzzy as well compared the the V30 - warmth in a good way though.

Overall?  I prefer the definition of the V30s so they will stay as my gigging speaker.  For home practice at lower volumes, the G12Hs will be preferable for their extra warmth.  They'd be a great way of adding some more bass to your tone if you need it, but my Laney Klipps have more than enough anyway so I think the V30 is better for my needs when gigging.  I prefer their "punch".

I've actually stacked the two 2x12s to make a 4x12 and I'm running my Little Rock through both cabs.  In my living room

Oh, and it turns out the seller is an electrical engineeer who builds custom amps.  We're going to meet up again so I can try some of them out.

Oh the GAS........

Will do.  He has a brand new fully hand-wired JTM-45 head that needs going into a cabinet.  Built from a Ceriatone kit, he's looking for £400.  I can't wait to try that out...
