Which amp to go?
« on: July 20, 2007, 01:15:10 AM »
Ok, so i've currently got a rack setup (ADA MP-1s), a JCM900, and a VH100R... however, i've got my eye on a Tiny Terror or a Little Rock at the moment. Unfortunately, i've been forbidden from spending a little of my savings (for a good reason, a Ba in Recording Arts won't pay for itself!), so something has to go to fund it. I'm going to keep the rack, as it is pretty versatile, and the MP1s are something I see as investments as well as good pieces of gear.

So it's down the JCM900, and the VH100R. I really can't decide between either of the amps- it's been in the balance for about 7 or 8 months now, and i still can't come to a decision.

The JCM900 is a classic amp, and no matter what I dial in, there's always a good sound coming out of it. The downside is that it is only a single channel amp with switchable volume, so there's no clean channel for me.

The VH100R is more versatile, with all the channels/switchable gains, and the FX loop options. Much better clarity than the JCM900, but it is quite hard to dial in a decent tone- a lot of the time it is too fizzy and just lacks something. The amp is bar-steward-heavy too, much more than the JCM900 (admittedly it is only 50w).

Help me decide!  The main style of music that i play is doom, kinda Electric Wizard and The River sound. Occasionally i'll play some tech-DM too, but not so much. Both amps can cover both sounds, but the JCM900 slightly better doom sound and the Laney better for DM.

Cheers fellas,

Oli

I think that the 900 is the better amp of the two you listed, especially if you set it for mild crunch and then add and OD to it. You can get a really beautiful distortion from it then.

You didn't mention whether you are interested in amps or combos. If you're looking for a head, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Splawn Competition for what you're looking to do.

I know I'll sound biased because I have a VH100R as well but I also have a JCM800 2205 which is pretty similar to JCM900. IMO the only thing the JCM900 has over the VH100R soundwise is that it sounds like a Marshall (for obvious reasons). If you like the Marshall sound then you should keep that. I think the VH100R is better in every other way.

You said it lacks something. Have you tried boosting it yet?

from the way you describe the Marshall and Laney it seems you favour the Marshall - keep the Marshall would be my advice, you already have the ADA for versatility.

I used to have a JCM900 myself. But much prefer my VH100R.

To dial that fizz out, turn the treble to 0 and use the Presence as your treble control. I found doing this really clears the sound a lot. Do that and see what you think.

Which is the sound I love. :-)

You just have to decide but to me it sounds that you would keep the JCM900 if it wasn't for the clean sound...
