Maple neck and top with Mahogany Body
« on: July 23, 2007, 11:43:10 AM »
If I build a guitar with a maple neck- archtop maple top, + mahogany body... how would that sound in theory?

would the mahogany body balance the general sound? (because the maple neck and top would make it sound very bright)

Discuss... me and my mate are having a hard time thinking about this because many people use mahogany neck + mahogany body... and I have never seen maple neck + mahogany body.

Neck-thru guitar with plain maple top...

help please because I want my Bridge Nailbomb to sound awesome in this guitar.

Yeah the ZW's have maple necks.

Is it a maple neck through with mahogany wings.  When built that way the wood for the neck section is the main tonal contributor so it will probably be quite bright but the mahogany should still add some warmth

If its a set neck it will sound a lot more like a les paul because the mahogany body will now be the main contributor but the maple neck will add a bit more top end to the procedings

You dont mention fretboard wood - that can also have quite an impact.

Obviously wood is organic so these are only ever guidelines - cant really garantee how a wood will sound from tree to tree

Here is a book that basically describes how guitars get there unique sound.  It has a chapter on some of the main woods and what they contribute

I have an epi ZW and a gibson xr 1(les Pauls), both have maple necks, i think it seems more punchy, and then the ZW with the maple fingerboard aswell enhances that

I believe Ibanez Artists used to have a maple neck, and the older ones are really popular these days. The newest models seem to have a mahogany neck, though.

i have worked on an old 70's one recently - its a 3 piece mahogany neck through. although it does have a little fillet of maple under the fretboard on the body to get the correct neck angle
