Author Topic: Help? Wiring phase/Peter Green mod question... (Read 5018 times)

Right, I've spent all evening wiring in new pots/caps into my Tokai Love Rock Relic and fitting a bridge Mule. The wiring harness I stole from another guitar (that was working perfectly) and the Mule I have had fitted to a guitar previously (with no issues).

In the middle position of my Tokai I'm now getting a very thin and nasal sound with both volumes on full. If I back one of the volumes off a touch, the nasal sound goes away and I then have what sounds like a second volume control for the other pickup! I think I've given myself the Peter Green mod by mistake?

I'm assuming the polarity of the original neck pickup and my bridge Mule are not what they should be for "normal" operation, therefore I've got the Green mod? Does that sound about right?

Yes indeedy Dave, that's out of phase! :D

Do you want to "fix" it? If one of the pickups has 4-conductor cable, you just need to swap round the hot and earth wires.

If they both have braided single-conductor cable, you need to flip round the magnet in one pickup. Is it your unpotted, uncovered Mule? Easy to get at the magnet if it is.

swap the black n red wires on the neck pickup. problem solved.

Cheers guys - I thought I could swap the wires over to fix it. However, I quite like the sound of it so I'm going to keep it as it is :D

if i were you i would add a push/pull phase switch to the neck volume so you can have the best of both worlds!!!

I've always liked the out-of-phase sound. My first proper guitar was a Hamer, and they used to wire the pickups out of phase as standard (dunno if they still do).

It sounds great with loads of distortion - like a tinny little radio at the bottom of a well. :D

Ha ha - that's it! Like a Wah-Wah c--ked half way!

It's weird when you rol the volumes down though as the dominant pickup takes over and you lose the "honk".

But then you can fiddle around and lower the volume of the dominant pickup as well to get the phasey sound back. It's not the most useable sound, perhaps, but it's a lot more fun than the standard 2 HBs in parallel/in phase sound.

I think I might wire my sunburst V out of phase when I eventually put BKPs in it.

The out of phase sound is one of my favourites.....all my guitars have some kind of switch on the bridge pup so I can get that sound, but the best ones of all are the nailbombs on my RGT
My most used setting is to have the neck tone set to maximum bass and the bridge set to maximim treble. The volume of the bridge rolled back a little so that the neck pups thick grind is dominant with the bridge sizzle adding a cutting harmony.
Not a sound that will suit everyone but I love it for what I'm into 8)
