What is the ultimate effect box for rock?
« on: August 08, 2007, 08:57:21 AM »
What effect box have been bestowed by the gods to create the killer sounds we all search for?

I need some help to find an effect box that matches really good with a angus young signature SG. Im mostly into metal, so i dont have a good overview over rock stomp boxes.

So this is the deal:

This little shite kid has a brand new signature SG, but he doesnt have a stomp box. His father asks me to do the dirty work, to get him a stomp box that can do everything from Led Zeppelin through AC/DC to Guns and Roses. If this spectre is too wide, i can always buy two. But which ones?

You want an MI Audio Crunchbox - that will nail all of those tones.  A decent amp will be the key, but this overdrive box is the dog's bollocks for that kind of stuff.

It depends on the amp my metal loving friend.  My Crunchbox doesn't like my Matamp - it fizzes and farts badly.

Into a clean-ish Marshall/Laney, the Crunchbox is indeed a great choice  :D

You ask about the box for rock ... did you hear about the Box of Rock?

Just tried it yesterday in Make'n Music in Chicago and was great, unfortunately they didn't have the Vexter version which means 100$ extra for looks, which is why I didn't buy ...

You'll struggle to get the sounds of the bands you mentioned if your amp is the El Diablo. It's just not voiced for it. I love the classic british crunch hence why I sold mine.

+1 on the Box of Rock from the one I tried

Problem is the box of rock seems to like some ampsand not like others (like most distortion pedals I suppose).

With your passion for amps (& other kit) I dread to think what you will be charged for excess baggage when you are returning to Europe

I will say that the painted versions seem to hold their value a bit better if you ever sell it.
Goodbye London !

Thanks a lot for the answers, but i understand i need to answer to the amp question before a verdict can be made.

I think this little brat has a Marshall amp, but as far as type is concerned, i dont know? Considering that his father bought him a AY signature SG, i think the amp is a bit beefed up. But he was not that fond of the sound. So i think he needs a signal booster or something a bit crunchier than the marshall overdrive.

I am as lost as you all are...

Well the Box of Rock works well with Marshall valve amps, but I dunno about transistor versions.

Assuming that the kid is playing at home and at lower volumes I'd say that a suitable distortion pedal would be better for low volume (home based) playing rather than an overdrive or booster.

Funny enough the Zvex nanohead would have been pretty good for home use if old marshall tones where required (at lower volumes). So good Malcom Yound has 3 of them for home use.

Rob...

I took the fulltone OCD. It had a killer feel to it, and a lot of versatility.

I couldnt find the Box of Rock, so i took the second best.

Thanks a lot for your help guys.

For me, a wah - so versatile if you know how to use it properly.
