Strat me up baby, yeah.
« on: September 15, 2007, 11:11:59 AM »
Righty so next week I'm part exchanging my SG, thinking of getting myself a strat. The goal is to pimp this mother out like my tele, so new pickups  shall be required.

Looking for something Smashing Pumpkin-ish, nice cleans but HUGE distorted tones too. I know Billy Corgan uses Lace Sensors in his strat, and while I don't want a clone, I'm looking for something to give me that huge tone.

Thinking of a sinner set, but a set isn't available from the online store, only a bridge unit.

Get recommending you kings of tone, princes of new pickups.

Maybe a Sinner bridge and a couple of Trilogies?  Or even just a Trilogy set.

I'd guess that would give you a fat, singing kind of tone without any icepick trebles.  But I really don't know what I'm talking about with BKP single-coils.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks for the input, shall check out the Trilogy's. Anyone else with some single coil experience out there?

I've got a set of Irish Tours in my Strat. They do cover a lot of tonal possibilitys but your not going to get the same kind of distorted tones like the HB's can give you. The bridge is still pretty hot though. Afghan Dave has a Sinner if you need to know what they sound like. I've got two Trilogys in my Charvel in the middle and neck positions and they are hot.

Been listening to some Mother's Milks, and thinking of one in the neck. Still want a nice thick bridge tone, and the distorted tone I'm aiming for is from a single coil, albeit a red lace sensor.

I've emailed Tim, we'll see what the guru has to say.

Oh and a middle pickup, what are they used for? I've been a tele/gibson user for ages and never found the need for an in the middle tone...

If you want to copy the Lace combination corgan was using (Red bridge, Silver middle, Blue neck) during the Siamese Dream/Pisces Iscariot/MellonCollie eras,
i would go for a Sinner bridge, Irish Tour middle, and Mother's Milk (or Trilogy?) neck.

But that's just pure speculation
I just don't know enough the BKP single coils.

That's my thinking, I do love the tone he gets on those albums, also likee the John Frusciante clean neck tone. Mother's Milk in the neck is looking pretty sweet right now..

I just wonder if there'd be too much difference in volume going from a Sinner bridge to a MM neck?  The MMs are fairly low output vintage style pickups, but it sounds like the Sinner's a bit of a monster.

I emailed Tim, just waiting on actually going to find a decent mexi strat. Gonna be pimped out so it will look like my tele (and Gilmour's black Strat with white p/ups. Sexy)

My pickup ideas have taken a u-turn. Forget about loudness, Strats sound SWEET as they are. The Mother's Milk set looks like the set I'm going for, and after hearing a few clips I'm 66% sure.

Not heard the bridge MM though, anyone out there with a set want to describe the overall tone of the calibrated set?

Just need to sell some cr@p on eBay to fund them...
