Have you tried tru-oil(gunstock oil) for necks phil.  I havnt got around to getting any yet but its reported to be a good compromise between oil and lacquer.  you can even get it as shiny as lacquer if you do enough coats but i dont really see the point in that.

noticed the profile gauge and digital vernier - are you taking records of all these things!!  I suddenly have an idea for a book filled with various neck shape profiles - i know builders that would kill for something like that

Well spotted Wez, I'm getting the measurements for some necks for Bainzy and ToneMonkey.  If you want any at the same time let me know.  I figure that I will scan the pages in and hope that it doesn't distort the shape.  An intersting thing that I an finding with the older necks is that they all seen to be asymetrical, which I think must be down to the wear over the years (or my lack of skill with the profile guage!).

i would be happy to get a copy of any you do if thats all right - its always good to have this stuff for reference.  

getting these measurements transfered into new necks is always fun!!
