Yamaha SG - Rebel Yell?
« on: September 20, 2007, 01:15:37 PM »
Just got a Yamaha SG 800 of Ebay; i'm guessing its more or less a double cut-away les Paul - made out of the same wood - same scale same maple cap etc (still waiting on Parcel Force)

I'd like to stick something as close to a RY as possible in there but with a little less emphaisis on high mids - more mid mids.  I like the output and organic tone of the RY's (and everything else about them) but i'd like just a little bit more grunt.

Could I have a set specially wound or is there a BK in the range pretty close to this? ie the Holy Diver?

Cheers

Crawler maybe?

I think that's all about the mid-mids; the HD is (I believe) more low-mids.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

I have Crawlers in a Yamaha SG. There's some clips around in the players section.

Otheres who put Crawlers in a Yamaha SG haven't complained yet.

I would think Rebel Yells would sound fantastic in it. It would make the SG very growly, beefy and agressive. But if it's mid-mids and grunt that you want, Crawlers will deliver.

I would stick with the RYs  I just adjusted the pickup height up a bit on my Guild S-100 and now it's really beefy and more mid-middy sounding! 8)

listen to that steve's clip with the holy diver n a les paul
if you ignore the digital tone, it's pretty close to what you'll get
fat, organic, full and very versatile

I am thinking either Holy Divers or Crawlers would work just as well for the job here.  Just depends how much output you want.

Or Rebel Yells too.  SQs are solid mahogany and no maple top which means they have a lot of lows and low mids so if you are used to Rebel Yells in a Les Paul then Rebel Yells in a SG will give exactly the tone you are asking for.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.
