My Trilogy arrived!
« on: September 02, 2007, 08:51:36 PM »
At the moment I'm speechless, it arrived Friday and I spent the day shielding the guitar (an 89' Hondo Strat -don't laugh- it's a great guitar) which was long overdue (for shielding!-the BKP arrived quicker than I'd ever imagined)  and then changed the back (bridge Fender) pup for the BKP Trilogy with a zinc plate on the bottom and rated at 16k DC.

Been too busy playing over the weekend to write a decent review but I will as soon as I can put together a good soundclip of the pup. Thank you Tim and everyone at BKP!! (and esp you Arch   )

Whoa...!!...THIS is the sound I've been looking for-for nearly 35 years from a bridge pup...it is astounding in every way in every position (travel) of the volume pot. I hope to have a soundclip ready before next week, it is truly (to me) amazing by comparison to the stock Fender. Suffice it to say, any guitar I have in the future will definitely be getting BKP's in every position.

Wow..the sheer quality..everything from clean to hot, blue and righteous...

I can definitely understand how everyone feels about them now, the old Fender pup was no slouch but the BKP made it sound absolutey generic by comparison (lol)...it's got that "round" sound I was always missing in the bridge of a Strat..hard to describe really..it just really couldn't have been more perfectly suited to me. Tim really does a fantastic job with matching the player to the pick-up.

Thank you, that's extremely tempting but actually the original Hondo pup that was in the guitar when I bought it is one of those rare pups that sound more like a Fender than a Fender (lol) , the bridge had died of natural causes and the middle was damaged (windings) when my brother worked on it a few years ago which is why I ended up with the Fender stock replacements in the bridge and middle, I actually really did love those old Hondo pups and have fought to keep the last original in the neck position.

Oddly ,it has a zinc plate on the bottom just like the BKP (not as high a grade of course), the Fender of course has a plastic bottom but they both interact with the BKP perfectly...it's a very versitile combination.

This old axe is done but the next guitar I get will be getting a full matched set of BKP's :)

Well I dont actually think its for sale any more anyway so its a good job you dont want it  I put the Trilogy back into the bridge position of my strat, it sounds awesome there. I have it wired up so that theres no tone control on the bridge pickup now, I used to find it mushy but now I think its much better, it has some serious twang though :P I dont know if its the scatterwinding or how the other pickups in the guitar are voiced (BG Pickups vintage 60), but they sound very dull/lifeless compared to the trill.

I'd like to know if the proper bridge trill sounds any different to the neck one in the bridge position.

I think the Trilogies are like most calibrated Strat sets - the bridge pickup is wound hotter than the neck/middle ones, to compensate for the inherently thinner sound of the strings near the bridge.

So it should sound a bit warmer/thicker in that position than your neck one does.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I don't have the Trilogy wired to the tone pot either, none of them actually, I quit using it years ago, I have the regular 5 way switch but the Fender pup in the middle position has its own volume control and I can have it come in with either the original Hondo neck or the new Trilogy bridge pup, not sure if I understand your question but as powerful as the Trilogy is there is a very smooth transition going from the neck to the bridge, the Tril seems to have a natural compression and doesn't "jump" out at you when switching positions, it plays very nice with the other 2.

It's definitely more powerful than the other 2 but that's what I really wanted in a Strat, backing off the volume goes into the territory of a "normal" Strat and even some Tele sounds but bringing the volume to full gets into P90 territory..by far the most versitile bridge pup I've ever seen/heard for a Strat. Remember that mine has a zinc plated steel ground plate on the bottom as well (don't think those are standard to the Trils?) for a bit more punch in the midrange I think, whatever it's doin I love it!
