Richard Thompson = Genius!
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:37:12 PM »
Been listening to a lot of Richard Thompson of late (solo, R&L, as well as Fairport), and I've recently discovered a new favourite song. I've always been aware of this song from Daring Adventures but never gave it a dedicated listen on the hi fi until this week. Feel free to read the lyrics and follow along. It really captures Thompson's genius:

HOW WILL I EVER BE SIMPLE AGAIN

Oh she danced in the street with the guns all around her
All torn like a rag doll, barefoot in the rain
And she sang like a child, toora-day toora-daddy
Oh how will I ever be simple again

She sat by the banks of the dirty grey river
And tried for a fish with a worm on a pin
There was nothing but fever and ghosts in the water
Oh how will I ever be simple again

War was my love and my friend and companion
And what did I care for the pretty and plain
But her smile was so clear and my heart was so troubled
Oh how will I ever be simple again

In her poor burned-out house I sat at her table
The smell of her hair was like cornfields in May
And I wanted to weep and my eyes ached from trying
Oh how will I ever be simple again

So graceful she moved through the dust and the ruin
And happy she was in her dances and games
Oh teach me to see with your innocent eyes, love
Oh how will I ever be simple again
Oh how will I ever be simple again

Totally agree, one of the greatest guitarists on the planet, brilliant songwriter and singer. A real treasure. On the this track the richness of the guitar and the vocal is staggering. My PC speakers do not do it justice but I have it on CD so no problem for me.

Seen RT three times now, he's always great.  Got tickets to see him on 16/10/07 in Newcastle (well, Gateshead actually), should be great.

I've seen him a bunch of times, too, both solo and with his band. One time I even got to see him with Danny Thompson (from Pentangle as well as some solo Thompson albums) on bass!! And the last time I saw him, his son came out and played a couple of songs with his old man. Great stuff ...

Mrs 38th has said that we are getting a new PC and I can assure you Indy, I will  demand something that will enable me to properly evaluate clips that others have taken the trouble to post-this one was good in it's day but gets on my nerves.
