Country Boys Woolly Neck.... Please Help
« on: September 12, 2007, 06:32:50 PM »
I bought a pair of country boys off of flea bay a while back to fit to a Warmoth guitar I have. While the bridge sounds awesome the neck is really woolly. While good tones are available swapping from bridge to neck highlights a much more bass heavy tone. For a long time I've accepted this as par for the course with a Tele. However today I took delivery of a new American Series Tele and low and behold there is balance between the pups. Obviously different tones are available from neck through to bridge but no wooliness or extra bass....

I have read Tony Loco's thread on removing the cover off his Brown Sugar and was wondering if it's the cover that’s to blame. Looking at Tim’s comments in the other thread he says the cover he removed was of an older style before BK made their own covers. I believe the Country Boys I have are about 18-24 months old, would a new cover make a difference to my pups? If possible I would like to retain a cover on my neck pup as the aesthetics of the guitar (Blonde '52 thinline) really need it. Or do I need to ditch the cover altogether, in which case the CB's will go in the new Am Series Tele and a set of Blackguards will be ordered for the thinline. Ideally I’d like to return the CB’s to Flea bay and order a set of the blackguards for the thinline and a set of Yardbirds for the Am Series…. But finances won’t allow this option.

Mine must be around the same age as yours and I certainly wouldn't describe the neck pup as woolly -mine is nice responsive warm and woody. I regret to say that I am not currently at my best having had some surgery in the last few days and the painkillers I have  (which are not BKP unfortunately) definitely are woolly.I may have to come back on this unless others can nip in.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
BKP's: Apache, Country Boy, Slowhands.

The new covers would certainly make a difference although I personally don't find the CB necks over warm in the slightest. In fact they are the lowest wind of all our Tele necks and have a reputation for being extremely clear. It's worth checking your pots and caps to see everything is as should be and another quick check is to wire the neck coil straight to the jack socket so you're hearing the coil without the effect of any of the controls-at least that way you can rule out their effect.Removing the cover is another option and will make a considerable difference in tone.

I'm probably being overly harsh on the CB's, on reflection the removal of the cover prob would make the difference.

Anyway I'm now thinking of a set of Yardbirds for my new Am Series Tele as the Fenders sound really average. As I want to use 4 way switching is it possible to get the 3rd cable factory fitted?

I'm probably being harsh, but the tone of the neck doesn't balance at all with the tone of the bridge not like I would expect a calibrated set to.

Trying this pickup set through my new fender champ 600 on full volume and controling the output with the guitars volume only makes this more obvious. I think I will try and wire the pickup directly to the jack and see what happens, but I'm unsure why this may be a factor as the bridge shares the vol, tone and cap with the neck.

Although it's by no means a bad pickup is just doesn't balance with the bridge. I'm starting to get concerned that the neck PUP may not be a genuine BK, as there are no markings to suggest it is unlike the bridge which is clearly stamped as a BKP.
