Where do you buy your tubes from in the UK?
« on: November 01, 2007, 04:31:01 PM »
Hey All,

My Laney VC30 is needing a new quad of EL84's & I was wondering where everybody else get's there tubes from.
I got my last set from Watford Valves, but wasn't particularly happy with the price or the protective packaging (or should I say, lack of).
There's a guy on EBay selling JJ's & EHX at the moment, but thought I'd see if I'd missed any other suppliers.
Cheers!

From my experiences there are people on ebay now offering valves tested just as thoroughly as Watford Valves and Hotrox at much cheaper prices.

I've had good valves from WV, HR and ebay sellers and also bad valves from WV, HR and ebay sellers.  None are perfect so I go with the best price these days.

I just think it's strange that given the number of people with valve amplification in the UK there are really only two companies specialising in valves: WV & HR.
Perhaps I should give up my day job & start a new one?

I can recommend the matched NOS GE EL84 quads that Langrex Supplies (ebay seller - yitry) are selling on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EL84-6BQ5-GENERAL-ELECTRIC-NOS-BOXED-x-4pcs_W0QQitemZ260147781565QQihZ016QQcategoryZ39997QQcmdZViewItem).  I have had a quad of these from the same seller for a previous EL84 amp. Be aware that VAT is chargeable on top of the BIN price ! The tubes were very good and should also outlast any current production EL84's by quite a large margin.
Check out Watford Valves review of the GE EL84's. He rates them very highly.
