New COHEED AND CAMBRIA = win

I have just finished listening to the new Coheed And Cambria CD, Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Part Two: No World For Tomorrow. (You can preview the whole album on their myspace page)

It is by far the best album Coheed have put out to date. The production is excellent: the guitars are very muscular and punchy, less overtly "Bogner" sounding (not that that's necessarily a bad thing). The bass playing, as always, is top-notch, at its Power Windows influenced best. The new drummer is not as technical as the previous one, so there is less of an overt Rush influence on the new album. There are a lot more 'solos' on this album, though I wouldn't say either of Coheed's guitarist are lighting the fretboard on fire with their licks. Claudio's expertise is singing and playing two totally different lines/time signatures a la Geddy Lee.

The first 8 tracks are set VERY close together and are the most anthemic Coheed have put out. Compared to the dark tone of Good Apollo Part One, this is a very upbeat sounding album (until you read the lyrics). You can even hear a bit of Claudio's Prizefighter style material here and there.

The final track, The End Complete, finishes the tale of Coheed & Cambria's legacy and what happens to the solar system.

Fans of classic rock with a progressive edge and high singing (Rush, Yes, Asia) as well as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin will enjoy this album.

I'm suprised you mentioned that the drummer wasn't THAT technical, he used to be in the Dillinger Escape Plan and was amazing live, supposedly he practices rolls and paradiddles and stuff on the tops of water bottles, accurate stuff.  I guess he was going for something different on this album tho.

As for Coheed and Cambria, they were cool a year or two ago when I first heard of them but now I just cant be bothered with them.

Correction: It looks like a studio musician played drums on the album, not the new drummer.

Or wasn't it Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters)?

I might dig out IKSWTSE when I get home, decent album that...

Andy!

Yes, Taylor Hawkins played on the album. The drummer's name is Chris Pennie; this info is readily available on the 'net.

Taylor Hawkins, one of the best drummers on the planet! His work on this album is better than his stuff on the last 2-3 Foo Fighters albums.

But yeah, grrrreat album this!

just listened to "the running free" on myspace. shitee.
Sounds like a boring generic MTV-emo song with the singer cranked up a couple of octaves.
just started "the end complete" and it sounds much the same.
Also, the guitar tone is a bit lame and generic too. Kinda weak-sounding. That could be due to the hideous over-production though...
Not the least bit impressed.

Pissed off? lol
LOVING the Mules!
