Yes that's right - the phase inverter tube is the small one and the power tubes are the big ones.  If the power tubes are 2 years old a change would probably add some presence and brightness to the amp.

That would work fine - you don't need matched pairs for the PI tube (the 12A*7) - only the power tubes.

alright, last night i went and played on my amp again, and this time i cranked it up a bit. definitely sounds much better and doesn't sound dark at all. Maybe my amp just sounds kind of dark when the volumes low. i still bought a new PI tube off ebay though since it was only 14 bucks shipped.
