To start: Slash- for looking cool to a 15 year old. Such a tosser though.
John Frusciante- Cool, but could play like a bitch and rocked me so hard, learned a lot from the Off The Map DVD
Kurt Cobain- Made me realise that even someone musically inept like I could play a few chords and write great songs. Very influential and under-rated to most guitarists.

Right now: Hell I don't know. I don't listen to rock music for the guitars anymore. Joseph Arthur and his looping is impressive, Colin Hay and his simple, beautiful songs inspire me, and I'll always have a soft spot for Billy Corgan and his heavy yet tuneful bashings.

Ouch, tough one.

Starting out:
Jacob Binzer
Slash
John Fogerty
(I was 11 years old back then, cut me some slack)

Most influencial:
Al di Meola - a style and a sound that really gets to me.
Jason Becker - awe-inspiring in every way. A talent rarely seen, with passion and commitment to music.
Shawn Lane - see above.

Where are you from since you like Binzer? Denmark?

Yep. Been a D-A-D fan since I was 3. I still love them, but they are no where near what I listen to most.

Hmmm, to kick off ( and bear in mind that I started out as a bass player) , I would say Ronnie Lane ( Faces) Paul McCartney and on guitar John Lennon ( same thing applies to John as Badgermark says about Cobain-not the greatest player but had a certain something).

Thereafter, major influences, meandering from 6 to 4 strings, Ronnie Wood, Willie Weeks and George Harrison.

:D E gods me & my big mouth !

When i first started out the 3 for me were

Blackmore
Angus young
Jimmy Page

Now as an older, longer player

Angus/Malcolm Young, if i could be just one guitarist for a night i`d choose Malcolm Young. He must have the molst fun job in R `n`R. Doesn`t have to run around just stands there & pounds out riff after riff, lucky sod !!

Satriani, i wish i could play with his fluedity over the instrument.

EVH, fire & brimstone, flash & bash all rolled into one !

God I could do with a Gin & Tonic !

Started me off:

Slash (popular, isn't he?), Steve Clarke (coolest effer ever), Steve Vai

Biggest effect on me since:

Probably Slash again, Vai again (odd combo, i know), and Hendrix.  i know there's only meant to be three, but also James Hetfield.   i can't actually play like any of them mind!

These guys got me started, in other words my top 3 pre-guitar playing heroes:
Brian May, Ace Frehley and Scott Ian.

Since I got my first plywood Marlin guitar, these guys have inspired me most:
Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and James Hetfield.

The three players who made you start playing in the first place:
1. Kirk Hammett/James Hetfield
2. Slash
3. I can't even remember

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:

this is a hard one...
1. Kirk Hammett
2. Criss Oliva
3. Warren Haynes

Kirk Hammett is on the first spot only cuz Metallica is just simply the band whose stuff I've learned the most, so the influence is obvious that way, he ain't my favourite guitarist or anything

In future I hope it would look something like this:
1. Alex Skolnick
2. David Gilmour
3. Criss Oliva
Metal is forever, but I still got the blues for you

not in order:

Started me playing:
Tony Iommi, Fast Eddie, Brian Tatler

Greatest effect on my playing:
Tipton/Downing, Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi

My brother played me Motorhead, and I thought - "mmmm guitar based rock actually rules". Then I listened to Sabbath and Diamond Head obsessively for 3 months and decided I had to learn. I would have brought an SG, but I saw a Flying V first, and obvious Tatler played one from time to time.

Hard for me to seperate Tipton and Downing as I dont know who exactly writes what in the tracks. I think Tipton has the edge playing wise, Downing is more stylish though ;) I love Townshends rhythm improvisation and chordal solos, I'm always ripping him off. Brought a Sabbath song book to learn guitars, I guess all my riffs are evolved Sabbath riffs in some sort of way.

Some great musicians mentioned in this thread.

Great thread!  Interesting themes cropping up, like how influential Slash is/was.

For me, I started played classical guitar when I was very young so I'll tweak the question slightly:

The three players who made you start playing (electric guitar) in the first place:
1. Slash - THE reason I wanted to play electric guitar
2. Jimi Hendrix - so, so far ahead of his time and hugely influential to eveyone afterwards
3. Eric Clapton - I admired the variety of styles he plays/played

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan - it's that big chunky rhythm sound and aggressive soloing, my all time hero
2. Malcolm Young - tone, tone, tone, tone and rhythm in abundance
3. Angus Young - blues/rock major/minor pentatonic with vibrato at its finest
