Yep. Been a D-A-D fan since I was 3. I still love them, but they are no where near what I listen to most.

Oh man.  I love D-A-D so much.  Seriously underated band.  I've managed to catch them a few times when they've played in London, and it's always been great fun to be surrounded by totally mad Danes who've travelled over to see them in a small venue.  :D

OK, my holy trinity (very difficult)

Got me started:
1. Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants) - Not flash, but they were the band that kick-started my love of guitar music when I was 9.
2. Steve Rothery (Marillion) - The raw emotion this man can get into a guitar solo is amazing.
3. Yngwie Malmsteen - The final straw that made me pick a guitar up.  Scary and inspiring at the same time.

Biggest influence:
1. Steve Vai - I love his whole attitude to the guitar and music in general.  I also love how he knows when to play fast, and when not too as well (something a lot of shredders forget)
2. Jake E. Lee - More for his Badlands stuff than with Ozzy, love that raw bluesy feel.  Seeing them live in a tiny, tiny club and being able to stand right in front of him during the set was awesome.
3. Angus Young - Just everything really.  The vibrato, the aggression, the mad stage presence.

The three players who made me start playing in the first place:

Ritchie Blackmore
Michael Schenker
Mark Knopfler
*

* I never was a fan as such, but Sultans of Swing was the first record where I actually thought "ah, that's a guitar making that sound".  Obviously I was aware that people made records with guitars, but I'd never really thought about it before.

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on me:

Roy Buchanan
Ritchie Blackmore
Carlos Santana

Just to explain that, I never actually got to the stage of being a good player - never did the 12 hours a day practice, bleeding fingers stuff.  Too lazy, too talentless.  I just noodle around and make up riffs really.

So although there are countless players I love to listen to, there aren't many I can actually hear in my own playing.  Roy Buchanan is one - for the way he got so many different tones just by varying his picking attack/technique and the way he bent the strings; I actually tried to emulate that.  Santana for his tone - that fat, singing neck pickup tone is the one I hear in my head.  And Blackmore just for being God to the 15-year-old that still lives in my head somewhere.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Here's my list...

1. Slash
2. James Hetfield
3. Dave Mustaine

Now...

1. Brent Hinds (Mastodon)
2. Matt Pike (High on Fire / Sleep)
These two draw heavy influences from each other and but it ultimately all stems from "old school" Metallica
3. Kirk Windstein (Crowbar / Down)

But I also like really like the old favourites like Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Green, Moore, BFG, Iommi.

The three players who made me start playing in the first place:

Steve Harris - Yup I started as a bass player and bought a P Bass!
Adrian Smith - I still want a white Jackson Strat so much..
Paul Stanley - I learnt how to pout, lust after BC Rich and play Lick it up before I knew a scale..

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on me:

Joe Satriani
John Sykes
Paul Gilbert

(I'd forgive people for not correlating my skills with any of these artists but I DO try!)

Made me start:
herm, just trying to remember what I was listening to aged 12... shite it's gone fast.
1) Kurt Cobain. Nirvana were the first band I really got into. I remember having Nevermind confiscated from me, and being totally pissed off with the teacher who nicked it.
2) Chuck Berry. My parents had got a video of a concert of his from somewhere, and I used dance away to roll over beethoven aged about 4. Didn't directly start me off on guitar, but that was probably the start of my love of guitar music.
3) Brian May. For compiling the best air guitar albums in the world... ever, even though I didn't really get into queen for a couple of years later.

Biggest influence on me:
1) Jack White. 2 months after I started, I got elephant for christmas and spent the next 6 months learning it cover to cover. His style has never really left me.
2) The Youngs. My other major riff influence, Most of the music I write sits somewhere between ACDC and the white stripes.
3) Hendrix. When I solo I aim for Hendrix, and usually hit as far as sounding rather messy and out of tune is concerned. Sounding anywhere near as good is a totally different matter.

Pete townshend is beginning to creep in as well.
Feline Custom, Fender MIJ mustang bass
Orange rocker 30
VHII and Mississippi queen

Only one guitarist got me started (I was only 10 :) ) and thats Hank Marvin.. I'm amazed he didn't get more (any!) mentions here but i guess its an age thing - not that I was around in his heyday myself..sorry rambling now....

The 3 that had the most influence on where I am is tough but i would go for:

Dave Gilmour - The Wall and particulalry Education solo just opened my eyes to possibilities, and that solo still gets me every time :)

Ritchie Blackmore - the man in black with a white strat - how I hankered after a white strat for years...and I still don't have one! :(

Joe Satriani - more of an influence on taking me back to instrumental music rather than my playing per se.

I would've said Kurt too, Nirvana were my first "love" band... but Kurt made me want to write songs, not play guitar.

There's a certain breed of 50-something guitarist who's hugely into Hank and no-one else - has to have exactly the right salmon pink (or is it fiesta red?) Strat, Vox amp and all that gubbins.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't think we have anyone in that category on the forum, but they'd probably be very happy with a set of Apaches.  :D

I would think all the metal head gain monkeys here would scare such people away

I like Hank, I prefer US 60s Surf stuff (the amount of ££$$££ on tracking down obscure surf cds is silly) - its just none of the guitarists of that era (who were all about 15 at the time) inspire me as a guitarist, even if its what I play most of the time.

I would also say that imo Mother's Milks are better for surf guitar than Apaches.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Tony Iommi is the #1 reason for me getting into guitar and the #1 influence on my playing.  I remember sitting there playing Atari while my dad was in the other room blasting the Master of Reality album.  From that point on my dad's tapes would disappear....

Other great influences in no order
Adrian Smith
Kirk Hammett
Dimebag
Dave Mustaine
Scott Ian
Mississippi Queen Set = Gibson SG Standard
Warpig = '88 Charvel Model 1

 yeah, I dont fit into that catergory on several counts, but Hank could rock - 'Warlord' was my first taste of rock guitar I would think, and the 2 string harmony stuff - a great intro to melody and harmony :)

PS - I think it was salmon pink for the real original (although of course for the really hard core it would have to be a Burns :) )
