I think I'll do it myself. I have to learn someday! I've done some work on the electronics in my guitars before and installed an EMG. I'll just take it slowly, and it shouldn't be a problem.

It isn't brain surgery, & concerns about the pickup physically fitting in the rout aside (you'll soon see if it will or won't), there shouldn't be any cutting/sanding/drilling/routing involved - i.e. everything you do should be reversible.

The only thing you can possibly "break" is the pot if you heat it too much with the soldering iron, but even that's hardly a disaster - new pots cost peanuts....

I got my guitar back, and they said the mounting "ears" (?) are the problem. Here's a pic of the IBZ pup:

And here's one of the BK's:

I put the Nailbomb in the cavity, and it looks to me like it fits guite well (this is about the same height I had my IBZ pups):

I'm going to email Tim and ask him if that's a problem.

I measured them, and the BKP is slightly (~3mm) taller when measured from the polepieces than the IBZ. But the IBZ has some kinda foam on it which makes it about the same height as the BKP. The guy had put the IBZ pups back about as far in as they go, and they were far lower than I used to have them. SO I don't think the BKP's should be a problem.

That looks fine - it fits!!

be nice to have the bit more adjustment room you would get from having the ends of the pickup route slightly deeper but i dont think it will be needed.

Tim said they should be fine. Though the neck pickup is a little high. The high e barely clears it on the 24th fret. But my dad's got some good tools if I need to route a few mm's, so all should be well. :D

The pickups are in but not wired yet. They fit fine, although the neck pickup is pretty damn close to the strings.

I always imagined that it would be the polepiece screws sticking out the back of the pickup that might be the problem.
Dimarzios dont have the pole screws going far through and the BKPs do stick out a bit more- this is where you would need to rout the cavity more

and the leg section might need to go a bit lower - its not a difficult job for someone who knows how to use a router. Probably best not to let that guitar tech see it again if this was an issue for him

Yeah, I doubt I'll be taking my guitar there anymore. This really put a bad taste in my mouth. If I can put the pups in with very little work, I don't know why a tech couldn't do it. The only cavity that might need a little bit of routing is the neck one. And there's plenty of wood under there. The bridge pup is almost perfect now. I just have to wire them in. :D
