CWP, Irish Tour, Nailbomb combo??
« on: November 02, 2007, 04:38:24 PM »
Hello, Ive posted a thread before this looking for initial advice, and Im just checking with you guys because I think Ive made up my mind which BKP's I want now   :)

I have an Ibanez RG350EX (H/S/H, Floating Bridge, Basswood body, Rosewood fretboard and I think its an Alder neck) and play it through a Peavey 5150 MkII.

Im looking for a really good metal tone along the lines of Lamb of God/Machine Head (your typical modern metal sound really). I also want nice cleans mainly from the single coil and neck pickup.

I was thinking Ceramic Warpig for the bridge, Irish tour in the middle and Nailbomb for the neck, what do you guys think?

Will this combo work as a full on metal bridge pickup, nice, warm, clean sounding middle and good versatile neck pickup? (Ive heard the Nailbomb is Uber-Versatile?)

Will they be balanced output-wise?

Thanks for all answers in advance.

I don't know enough about BKP's to really advise you, but my wife has a HSH setup and uses a piledriver in the single coil slot and it keeps up with the P90 neck and Nailbomb bridge quite nicely. You might find the Irish Tour gets swamped by the other pickups.

I think Tim is the man to ask...

I can't really help with the h/b's as I only have Strats/tele with s/c. I am wondering if you are just trying to fill the middle slot rather than thinking of it tonally as the emphasis was on the neck and bridge though correct me if I am wrong. In which case the IT will be of less importance.I don't have experience of them but if I judge the quality from those I do have then an IT will be fine. Middle pickups are neglected imo.

So you all think it would be best for me to email Tim?

And to 38thBeatle, I use my middle pickup quite alot for clean stuff, and sometimes for some gentler solo stuff

You've gone for a pretty good combo for what you want, but can you be more specific about what sounds you want from wach pickup, because there are a lot of possibilities for you!

The C-Pig is probably BKs best 'modern metal' pickup, alongside the miracle man, subject to what flavour of modern you want. But what do you want out of the middle and neck?

So far, from what you've said, the painkiller, A5 pig and miracle man would also make good bridge pickups, so can you describe the tone more specifically (LoG and Machine head have pretty differing sounds through their careers for anyway!) and I dont see exactly why you've chosen the IT and NB neck? What souds are you after from them?

For the bridge and the Ceramic warpig I was thinking like the tone from machine heads latest album but slightly more natural sounding if that makes sense. And from Lamb of Gods latest album aswell I really like those tones.

For the middle, I like using this pickups for clean fingerpicking stuff like interludes in songs and stuff like that. I just want a really nice warm clean tone cos my 5150 doesnt have the best clean tone so something to warm it up a little bit and maybe get some light blues aswell.

For the neck I chose Nailbomb because Ive heard its Uber versatile and Id like to use that for cleans and pretty much anything else like blues, shreddy stuff, or just a more rhythm orientated tone for metal. Hope i dont sound like a tit, Im not really a massive pickup guy.

Id also like to put coil taps on both humbuckers for more versatility so they should sound good split too hopefully.

Ive emailed Tim telling him pretty much what Ive just told you and am awaiting a reply.

Tim knows the deal. Do what Tim says.

For what its worth though (given that you've asked Tim!), I think that the C-Pig as a bridge pickup would be great. Its not quite either Sacrement or Blackening sound, but it'll get you a better compromise than anything else.

For fingerpicking on the midle IT wouldnt be my first choice. Probably an apache. But theres the question of balance with powerfull humbuckers, and the IT delivers very good cleans while doing that.

NB neck sould cover what you want. but a cold sweat, abraxis, mule and many others would also do it. It depends where your priorities are within that versatilty. For all equally (cleans, shred, blues) the NB is a good choice. For more shred but still great cleans and blues: cold sweat. For more cleans but still great shred and blues: mule. For more blues but still great cleans and shred: abraxis.

Bear in mind that when people say that a Nailbomb is versatile they are probably referring to the bridge pickup, and the neck pickup is a different thing altogether. I don't mean to imply that the neck Nailbomb isn't versatile, but that you may not need it to get what you want, a WP set with an extra single coil may be fine.

Thanks for suggesting that. When I first started looking at BKP's, I heard Warpigs were the best for metal so I naturally wanted a set straight away haha. Im still waiting for a reply from Tim though, and as we've clarified, he's the Daddy, so what he say's go's pretty much.

Just to let you know, Tim replied and said I had picked a good combo :D
The only thing he said was that the Slow Hand may be better than the Irish Tour but I suppose I can try and get it swapped if its not what I really want. Im pretty sure you can do that anyway :? Anyway thankyou all for your help. Ill be a BKP user soon! :D
