a Nailbomb or a Painkiller?

They say that DC is not = output

Theres a gnats nadger between them, but I'd say the nailbomb. Could be wrong though: I had them in the same guitar, one after the other, so height could well have been different.

They're very close though.

Although the Painkiller has more output, I don't know if that makes it perceivably more powerful than the Nailbomb.

To my ears, the Painkiller has a fair amount more output than the Nailbomb, although I've not had them in the same guitar....

I will re-listen to the recordings tonight of both pups and tell you what my subjective opinion is.

I have too and i would say Painkiller despite Nailbomb having a bigger DC resistance (or at least i think it does)

I think that because the Painkiller has more of a peak in its response that it would seem to penetrate more (Ooh - Err! :oops: ) - sonically that is!.

In many ways a Mule might seem just as loud as a Nailbomb because it is a very dynamic pickup, but the Nailbomb will sound more saturated or seem to have more gain

In very general terms though, the higher the DC resistence the higher the output - you get a good idea of how hot the pickup is from the DC resistence.

Just listened to the clips ...

Well, that was certainly enlightening.

In the same guitar and using the same amp & cab, playing the identical riff  with the same mic/recording chain ---

The Nailbomb is more dynamic, with more space between the frequency ranges of bass, midrange, and treble.

The Painkiller is more focused, has a lot more lower midrange energy. It also sounds more compressed than the Nailbomb. It's not more nasal, but that lower midrange peak adds a good amount of 'chunk' to the tone.


And the winner is ...

To my ears the Nailbomb has more subjective power when you directly compare the two.

The Painkiller has a helluva lot more chunk and grind going on, however.
