Need a goooooood floyd
« on: November 12, 2007, 08:57:13 PM »
Hi guys!

Getting my custom guitar soon! And I need a good floyd! I want the best! I heard Kahlers are the best, but They are not for a necks with radius 16'', and I really want at least 16''! I want to have that ibanezish wizard neck playability.

Any sugestions? Price doesn't matter, it has to be the best!
I wish women were like pickups - if they lack output, you sell them... or ask Tim to rewind them :D

OFR
Gotoh (my maverick has a brand-specific pressing of one and it is unshakeable (in tuning that is) once set up)

Avoid Wilkinson unless you are going for Wilkinson inventions as Wilko Floyds, in my experience, are really cheap and nasty.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Back when I had a floyd guitar (Ibanez Radius - the Satch model before it was his signature model) it used to piss me of with the lack of bass end, that trem just killed it.

The Ibanez lo-pro trem stayed in tune great, but surely there is something with more mass and doesn't effect the tone quite so much.

I always loved Slayer's tone so I'd be tempted to go with a Khaler if I got another whammy-bar metal machine.

Can you not adjust the Kahler with the individual string heights enough?

I think the OFR is designed for a 10" radius but most people seem to use them ok on flatter fretboards.

no regrets about upgrading to an OFR. tone is great even if you dont use the thing.

The Kahler flatmount trem whilst very good is not a Floyd
They more than any other trem were accused of robbing tone and sustain if poorly fitted.
I do wonder how many of the players suggesting them have actually had a guitar with one on ( the "if its good enough for Kerry King" arguement does not count as personal experience)

As far as Floyds go there are only about 3 worth looking at
1) Floyd Rose Original - still the best IMO
2) Ibanez Edge/Lo-pro Edge
3) Gotoh Floyd Licensed unit

I dont know what you mean about the Trev Wilkinson stuff
Trev is nothing short of a genius and this industry owes him a lot for his work

If you mean the cheap Floyd that the Maverick company went with to keep costs down - that is not down to Trev himself but rather due to the limitations of cost that were imposed to sell the Maverick guitars at a certain price point.

There are some shims available to alter the radius of the Floyd original to a flatter radius if need be

Schallers are good too. slightly different tone than an OFR, but great. though i am not sure if you can buy them retail as easy as an OFR. most companies that use thhem (well, Vigier only, from what i can remember) get them factory direct, with their logo stamped on
