I'm getting one soon, with a Floyd. Nice guitar. I like NWOBHM tones, "Crazy Train", "Unleashed in the East", stuff like that. My question is-and I've read every related post here 100 times and still can't make up my mind-would a Painkiller in the bridge be too bright for this guitar(neckthru, maple/alder) or can you get away with it? Would the body type and wood kind of cancel out the mid scooping of the Miracle Man? I'm also considering a Cold Sweat or maybe even a Rebel Yell because the RY sound clips consistently tend to be my favorites, but you can only tell so much from a clip. Help!!  (Oh yeah I play JCM800/Greenbacks live and rehearsal and an Orange Rocker 30 at home)

Welcome!

I would say that you have 3 contenders for that guitar:

1. Painkiller
2. Rebel Yell
3. Miracle Man

The Miracle Man has the most energy at the frequency extremes. The Rebel Yell might be a bit more dynamic. The Painkiller will be the most oldschool of the three and has a wonderful lower midrange chunk.

Will any of them be too bright? That's totally subjective.

There are little tricks that you can do to tame the top end if you think your choice is over-bright.

Personally, I think maple sounds great and I love its aggressive nature!!

Thanks!! I'm going to try to get a 70s/80s Les Paul Custom in the new year and probably put a RY in that. I've also got a VHII that I'm going to put in a Gibson Explorer I have.  I think I'll try a Painkiller.

tim once told me it was his opinon to go for ceramics in maple. i just have one maple guitar, and in my more limited experience i do tend to agree since i experimented with quite a few pickups in there.

I'm sure I've read a fair bit where people say you should go Alnico V with hard, dense neckthrus (and even more so with a Floyd) as opposed to softer mahogany but everybody's got an opinion and I really want to try the PK. I'll report back when it's done.

Would "oldschool" mean that the Painkiller is sort of the most "rock and roll" of those three-or at least, more so than the Miracle Man? Something that could do "Never Mind the Bollocks" and "Restless and Wild" if I felt like it?
