versatile? help me choose?
« on: November 26, 2007, 03:04:18 AM »
with christmas coming up, i've been seriously drooling over some of these BK's.. it's time to put my SG on steroids.
I'm currently looking for my tone. so far the Warpig has me - I want to be sure though, seeing as its twice as expensive if you're in canada (uk pound = roughly $2.50 canadian dollar i think? not sure).

what does it do BESIDES metal? i've heard all the clips, it does an awesome job. but i can't play metal all too well, i'm in a rut with my playing. i need a tone boost to inspire me to start improving again! right now i'm in a Led Zep / Rage Against The Machine kind of riffing phase. it's starting to depress me! I like getting a raunchy guitar sound.. i've heard the high-gain brutal metal clips, are there any rock/hard rock clips kicking around? any clean clips? i'd like to get an idea of the range of this pickup.

also debating whether i should just get a bridge, or get a calibrated bridge/neck set.
can anyone offer the story of their pickup's setup (A5 vs ceramic, which pickups where, etc) and how it all worked out?

thanks,

j

I have a ceramic warpig. It cleans up alot better than expected, even if it is through a 5150 II (it's hard to get a true clean sound out of it)

Try these links - one a heavy clip, one a jazz clip, both ceramic warpigs

Thankyou - that definitely made the choice a bit easier!
I'm almost decided at this point.. a calibrated set, ceramic pig in the neck..

I just don't know about the bridge yet. Warpig.. ceramic or alnico? What exactly is the difference? (I don't really know all that much about pickups, ashamed to say..)

Thanks again,

j

Or maybe a ceramic warpig in the bridge.. ?

I'm maybe thinking a coldsweat in the neck position. I need help choosing, it's a lot of money for me to drop on this (yes, buying my own christmas present) and I want the best tone for me that I can get. A tight, brutal bridge sound with loads of low-end that can clean up well and do the in-betweens. And a smoother creamy neck that can do clean / dirty as well.

haha.. i wonder how many times this has been asked. sorry to sound repetitive! any more sound clips are also a help.

From your last post, I think you're looking for a ceramic warpig BRIDGE and an AlNiCo Warpig NECK :)

Happy jamming

BKP doesn't do cermanic neck pups, do they?  AFAIK, all the calibrated sets with cermanic bridge pups have alnico necks.

Except the Painkillers, they do have a ceramic neck.

Can't help with the soundclips I'm afraid, but I have had an alnico Warpig set for almost 2 years now. I've used them in two different guitars - a thru-neck ESP (maple neck/body core, mahogany wings, rosewood board, Floyd Rose) and a custom bolt-on Warmoth (mahogany/koa body, maple neck, ebony board, Wilkinson).

I really do think the Warpigs will do everything you want. They are great metal pickups, with as much low end as you could ever want, but they are also far from being one-trick-ponies. They clean up really nicely, sound good for classic rock stuff if you back off the gain on the amp, and they coil tap very well (another upside of so much output I guess).
Warpigs.

go alnico
but why not a holy diver if you're not into brutal stuff?
the alnico warpig isn't so different, just a bit more angry

Hmm.. lots to think about. Alnico definitely, now that I've been set straight.

Warpig Bridge + Holy Diver Neck?
Warpig Bridge + Nailbomb Neck?
Warpig Bridge + Warpig neck???

A5 WP definitely seems the sound I want out of my SG's bridge pickup. For the neck sound, I kind of want a sound like a Frank Zappa / Carlos Santana / Slash mixed lead sound. Think: the little post-chorus riff in Sweet Child O' Mine. Warm, fat, cream, but still able to handle the gain if I decide to pour it on.
Anything you think would particularly suit my all-mahogany SG? I might be leaning toward the Nailbomb only because I heard it described as "more organic and open" - a good thing to have to balance out the bite of the Pig.

Thanks again,

j

Hi jonny, its DVaz from HC (well, heres my guitar forum home, but you know what I mean!).

Edit: does this mean you dont need the clips? The're near done, so you may as well listen to what I've got.

I'd say A5 bridge: its a warmer and smoother, adn with your need for rockier stuff as well it would suit you very well.

Edit: oh, and abraxis neck would be a really good one for you (if my understanding that its basically the same as the crawler is correct). Its got great cleans and gritty rock tones, with enough power and mid push to shred cheerfully if you so require.

Hey man! Yes, I would definitely still love those clips, I was gonna wait on them before I made any kind of final decision.

Thanks for the tip on the Crawler / Abraxis, out to hunt some clips on those.  8)

Well I put it on the backburner when I saw this thread: the clips here are as good/better than I can make, but I'd still be happy to put together what we talked about if it'll help you make a call.

I'll finish them tonorrow

I'll try to upload them here too, though last time I tried that it didnt work. For those intersted its clean, rock and metal clips of the A5 pig and ITs, with a little thing to show the effect of volume on the guitar, and some single tracked and some double to show a more realistic recorded sound: dont get your hopes up about the clips going in players: I dont see any reason that I'd have more success now than before but if anyone wants them, send me your email in a PM and I'll add you to it when I send them out tomorrow.

According to Tim's comment to Octavio on this thread, the Crawler and Abraxas neck pickups aren't the same after all, they're both AIV but the Crawler is a little hotter.

Seems the specs have changed, as there are definitely older comments on the forum indicating that the two pickups were the same.  I have both, but haven't got my Crawlers wired in yet.
