They seem to focus on specific models. Thats not custom, to me.

tell that to fenders custom shop.

to me, that process is custom guitar building - you take a known shape and customize it for the specific customers needs.

On my more arty farty days i prefer to think about myself as a maker of bespoke instruments   except for the fact i have been doing a few with more normal shapes recently... i suppose that puts me back as a custom builder

anyway, nice V.  good and simple with a few elegant touches

Very very nice V. I looks incredibly classy but evil at the same time.

I dont care what they call themselves, unless they'd at least try to make me a guitar thats half explorer, half ironbird with 4 warpigs, all wired in series all the time, 27 frets, a trident for a headstock, nuclear explosion graphic finish and smiley face inlays its not custom  :P

Not that I'd want said guitar....well, I probably wouldnt

Bespoke might be a better word for it, though, yeah.

Ran do have some email problems occasionally, even when i was talking to them during the build of mine there were problems (over a year ago)- so they're not just ignoring you :)

Ran will do any bodyshape you like- just take a look at their gallery, there are a lot more than their Invader and Cruiser models. Dariusz is happy to produce multiple quotes based on different parameters; ie. maple top or just body wood etc. They'll even do things like let you change their logo- their current logo is a block letter type, but many people prefer the old curvier style. Other people have even had it in different fonts, even on the back of the headstock with nothing on the front (there was even a Ran logo made to look like the Dean 'wings' logo for a Dime tribute guitar, that was made from silver, looked really good :)). Most people tend to do a 'variation-on-a-theme' from the regular models, because they look good to begin with ;)

They are good for the price, i'd love to get another, but i can't afford it now as they were cheaper when i got mine :)

Ok, I wont hold it against them then.

I'm more seriously considering a Ran all the time, here.

Someone PLEASE tell me that 9 guitars, with 3 super-guitars, 2 of them customs and one wholly to my spec and totally fantastic is enough!

Anyone?

its never enough!!!

on the whole custom thing its quite likely that most people who order a ran ask for a specific shape they have seen somewhere else.  Most people that get guitars from me ask for a shape they know or a shape i have done before.  very few come to me with there own idea for a shape  - - they are quite welcome to though

I dont normally go for Vs, but that one is sexy! (Reminds me of Daves, despite being really different: probably just thta they're both really cool)

Kudos, buddy. And welcome to the Custom Club!

cheers mark! :)

and that ran is really nice, neemo. :)

EDIT: ran answered my emails really quickly when I emailed them around the time I was emailing bob @ legra too. What put me off was the wait... something like 8 months.

when you get your V let me know how it plays, I'd eventually like to get a Ran myself

hell I want an 8 string V for Meshuggah riffing, I wonder if BKP would do a special 8 string pickup just for me :P

BKP have done 8 string pickups for customers before but you have to supply the bobbins for it I think.

Ran don't do 8 strings yet unfortunately :( But as Steve said, BKP can wind an 8 string, and Tim said that they were developing a 8 string model, i'm not sure when it was going to be ready, but it's probably not too far away :)

I didn't see this thread before.  I normally don't particularly like the look of Vs.  Or white guitars.

BUT that is AWESOME :)

Great stuff!

I've decided.

No ran. No need. I cant reasonably expect it to do anything my current guitars dont.

I am going to keep my fingers crossed about the blackmachine custom shop opening its doors again, though!

Just went and got a quote on a dream guitar. Won't really be able to afford it right now but I'd be interested in what they'd charge.

Oh and it's VOMITBURST and has a satsuma holding a switch-blade on there somewhere.

I'll post transcript of the quote.
I too use chicken as a measurement.
