I saw a part of Black Dog on the news. It took me 10 seconds to recognize the song. I thought it was sloppy and I didn't like Page's tone; too much compressed gain.

Don't flame me, I like Zep as much as the next guy and I can't judge a whole gig on a 30 second clip.

His tone was very modern sounding I thought. Wasn't bad, just not expecting it.

I am such a non-Led Zep fan, this is the most coveted reunion in the world ever... and boy don't they know it. I've smelt a money rat since day one and now reports that they're set to earn £1Bn with a world tour just pours hot water all over this idea that they only got back together for the charity gig for that Atlantic Records guy.

Eh, I don't think any of them are hurting for money -- though not many would turn down a few million!  Still, everyone knows Plant is the most reluctant (while, in contrast, I think Page would happy spend every moment remaining to him on stage with as much of Zeppelin as he can find ;)).

Quote
John Bonham was amazing, one of the greatest drummers of all-time but as far as I'm concerned, Plant could never sing and Page is a sloppy, greatly over-rated guitar player.

Plant's voice can certainly be an acquired taste.  Similar to, if different than, Ozzy, I think of Plant's voice as being more distinctive than anything else (though distinctiveness can be a powerful thing in voices -- being recognizable can be better than being good!).  As for Page, I always think of him as "the world's sloppiest guitar hero" :) yet ... there's something in his playing that gets to me.  I also think Page's talents as a producer are perhaps more potent than his talents as a guitarist and often neglected.

Bonham, of course, was an untouchable god of drumming, and without the rhythm section of John Paul Jones (whose own talents are often forgotten) and Bonham, there's an argument to be made that Page and Plant would have never been more than a heavy-blues version of Donovan. ;)  But they were all together, so that's all right. :) And like 'em or not, they made a hell of an impact on rock music -- even if they don't tour, it's nice to see the old bar-stewards summon up a "make 'em miss us" performance like that.  Gives us all hope for when we're in our 60s! (if we're not there already ;))

I can dig that. I respect anyone who does something different at their time, and they did.

Without a shadow of a doubt.

Oh excuse me, aren't I allowed to not like a band? Fine, I'll continue then - I also don't like The Beatles, Aerosmith and The Rolling Stones.

Chew on that.

And conversely I'm allowed not to agree with a 'review'. I will now stomp my feet, run to my room slam the door, and stare angrily at wall with my arms crossed wishing ill will upon all those who do not agree with me.

By all means, disagree... let's debate... but a string of rolleyes is hardly the most eloquent way of putting it across now is it?

Well, let's hope there'll be some kinda recording available on DVD/mp3, I am looking forward to it - as I am looking forward to see the review and gear report in Guitarist Magazine - well I hope they will do it
 :P

I was on business trip in London and on my flight back today read a quite nasty article in Daily Mail about Rock Dinosaurs that should stop gigging and stuiff - really stupid article man.
