For the Ibanez Elite (others need not apply)
« on: December 18, 2007, 09:08:33 AM »
Any Ibanez wiz kids (or parents... grandparents...) here?

Alright, so it has really been bugging me.  So, I have this Ibanez right?  Yeah, its an RG320 '03 model.  I got it used 3 years ago (holy shitee its been three years   ), and back then i wasn't as guitar savvy as i am now.  You can all feel free to ridicule me until death for the following:

I didn't ask what it was made out of

Now, here's where you all come in.  For those Ibanez knowledge gods out there, can you deduce or make an empirical guess as to what kind of woods it would consist of.  I am 99% positive the neck/headstock is maple.  It is a quilt top model, so obviously there is a maple cap.  But can you, Ibanez elite, make out, given that it is an RG320 from '03, Korean made, what the body wood may be (4 piece back, i believe, not that that matters)?  I know that is a big question.  It could be several things i'm sure.

Feel free to stomp my guitar honor into the ground, BUT FIRST gimme a guess (an educated one, of course  :P )

Very, very likely that it's basswood.  That's the Ibanez body wood of choice.

Edit:  Yep, it's basswood:

Out of interest, how did those INF3 and INF4 pickups sound?
I noticed a big change (after a little while for my ears to adjust) from the INF2s that were in my RG470F/TBL when I chucked in my miracle man.

Thanks SOOOO much Twinfan!!   PDT_006   I am at somepoint gonna put BKPs in this old girl, and i wanted to know what exactly the tonal properties i would be working with!

@ Roo: well the bridge, for what it is, is pretty fantastic.  Great clarity, very defined tonally.  A tad bassy on palm mutes, but generally great.  however, the neck is lacking quite substantially.  Very weak performance, and surprisingly enough, a weak output too.  It has a little bit of cream to it but most of the notes just sink in to this wash of cream and there is very little definition.

I quite like the INF pickups actually - Don't quite know what it is about them, but they work well with my RG.

:D For what its worth i think the INF pickups are better than the V7 & V8 pickups they sound alot smoother to my ears, Yep & its Basswood on the 320`s with a maple veneer as opposed to a cap. For the record i think Ibanez make the best sounding & to me playable guitars you can buy off the shelf for small to medium amounts of money. Infact i`d go so far as to say that an Ibanez model costing around £500 will be better made than a Gibbo LP costing £1200.

I'd go further and say an off-the-shelf Ibby costing £500 sounds better than a strat from 1969 costing £4000.

Ibanez rocks. My RG550 is nearly 20 years old and still going strong in perfect pitch.

In that case,

Is a Blazer Series, made in Japan, worth a hundred quid?

I don't know a whole pile about it. It's three single coils, grover tuners, everything totally stock, and in great nick.
Evil, Evil, Evil...
