Emerald clean clip part 2 - No effects
« on: December 20, 2007, 01:03:33 AM »
As requested, here is the 'naked' clean Emerald clip.

Same as before, with a few variations, starting on the rhythm pup and cycling through to treble.

Recorded on a Gibson LP Classic, with Emerald calibrated set, via a Boss-BR 900.

No effects whatsoever. This is just pickups - and guitar  :)

Great thanks Machinehead.

The emeralds seem to fit that warm mahagony tone of the LP like a glove, did your LP have that warm round tone acoustically? I seem to have heard rather unpleasing boosted mids from the Emeralds earlier but i dont hear that here, did you cut the mids a bit?

Very good balance there, nice ring to it and probably a nice chime trough a tube amp. Shame you put them trough a roland cube, it would do nice on a Marshall amp i think.

I would personally give that sound a bit more bass, could be the recording though.

Thanks again, nice clip!

Thanks for that.

My LP does have a nice unplugged natural resonance. It took me a while to find one that sounded like that. I tried a few Standards and other Classics and this one stood out from the rest.

The recording basically isn't just a case of no effects. It has no EQ either. I bypassed that as well. What you're hearing is purely pickups and guitar only.

Basically the only thing I was able to modify was the recording level, so no mids were reduced.

You did say you wanted a naked sound ...  :)

I don't actually use a Cube 30 live. Our band setup has both guitars going through Boss GT-6's, into a mixer and out via a Peavey 3.4 gig PA amp.

I would prefer a tube amp but it's just not possible in certain situations that we play and if you get the patch effect right the results are pretty damn good.

I'm working on a 'hot PAF' vintage 70's sound, using a Marshall Tube patch and a  rock/blues backing track at the moment.

Hopefully it'll be up sometime today.

I hate you now. I need a set of Emeralds for my LP now. For the bridge at least, might go for something mellower for the neck. The neck position is where I get sexy...

That was awesome. Really. What kind of stuff does your band play?

The neck Emerald couldn't be called mellow, I'm afraid  :)

But ... and you'll probably hate me even more for saying this ... I'm getting awesome results from simply rolling the neck volume down to around 7 - to get a mellower, fat bluesy tone.

There's no loss of volume, just less output really.

This is something that I simply couldn't do as well with the stock Gibson pup's.

The next clip I'll be putting up demonstrates this quite well.

...Curses. All this choice. Luckily I wont have the money (or the need really) to upgrade before this time next year anyway. Being a student sucks...

You should try having 2 kids ... Talk about a cash drain

Oh btw that would have been my guitar in Sound Control. Thickhead that I am, I missed the part where you said it was face down.

My guitar has no binding on the back

That's a well-made point.  I've seldom experimented with my volume (or tone) knobs simply because when I had the stock Gibson pups in my LP, there just wasn't much point.  But I oughta play around with them now that the BKPs are in there!

But let me add my "tasty tone and playing" kudos in there.  Very fine!  I felt something almost ... I dunno, Allman Brothersy in some of the bits in the middle and end, but that's probably just me! :)

Try 3!  8)

I always had more cash when i was still at uni, kind of odd really, but i do get some pocket money from my wife if shes in a good mood that is

Anyway, my youngest son came to check out my latest addition and he stood there admiring it for allmost half an hour trying to convince me he allready was old enough to play it and most certainly played good enough

Ahwell, kids rule, money sucks anyway....
