is it me or does 'man on the silver mountain' sound 100x better on 'Rainbow - On Stage' than on the studio album?! Studio version sounds a bit amemic, i mean its good, but not great like the live version.

are there anymore songs like this? Motorhead's 'Over The Top' springs to mind (actually a few motorhead tracks are like that)

mmm 'running free' by iron maiden too!

All the tracks on Kiss Alive (1) sound better than the studio versions....

I think the production on the first album is a bit wishy-washy - the live version's a little faster and more aggressive.  Having Cozy bloody Powell on drums doesn't do any harm either!  :wink:  Wonderful song though!!  

I still have my old denim jacket with the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow cover embroidered on the back (we metalheads had needlework skills in those days, y'know!  :oops: )

A few other live(ish) albums that sound much better than their studio counterparts:

Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous (the Lizzy studio albums often sound pretty weak, I think)
Humble Pie - Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore
Judas Priest - Unleashed In The Studio (sorry, East)

The immigrant song - led zeppelin.
the HTWWW version is just rawer, more powerful, more viking-y.
makes the LEe zep III version seem a bit tame. "excuse me, do you mind if we pop in for a quick rape and pillage?"

Everything AC/DC does live sounds better.

This also the case with Robbie Williams, believe it or not. Quite the rock band he has with him on stage.

Yeah, hang your head in shame! ;)

Regarding MOASM - My thinking is that the studio version is done deliberately gentler to be a tad more 'mystical'. One I would love to see Ritchie (some hope I know!) redo is 16th Century Greensleeves...now there is a track crying out for an up to date slam down :)

Every real band is better live. I'm not a fan of live albums or live tracks, per se, but I would rather see a band I enjoy live any day over listening to an album.
