nailbomb or painkiller?
« on: January 13, 2008, 08:48:33 AM »

i play a 1974 sg standard thru a soldano avenger.

i want a darker, grindy middy tone, whereas the stock pickups give a really anemic and hollow high gain sound.

im into stuff like the sword, everytime i die, glassjaw etc which does not require overtop gain for the shRedZ etc

what do you guys think?

Nice gear mate!

I'd go with the Nailbomb if I were you. It's got that more open organic sound;it does ETID really well.

Really though, any purchase of BKs should be run past Tim himself. Send him an email or call him and he'll send a whole load of pickup wisdom your way..

I had Nailbombs in my Explorer, and I wouldn't say they were darker, grindy or middy.  I'd say they had a hi-mid peak, plenty of bass and a fat treble, but not dark in any way.

I've got a Black Dog in there now and would certainly describe that pickup as dark, grindy and middy.

+1 for nailbomb
holy diver would be fine too (but darker)
maybe a ceramic version of nailbomb if you're after a tighter tone

i recorded a video with a Soldano SLO preamp clone and my les paul copy with holy diver
you'll probably get a similar but sharper tone

I reckon Mules would be a good choice.

Since nobody can decide, I'll throw in my 2 cents  ;)

I'd agree with Heavier Than Hell; get the Black Dogs. They're geared towards that darker, grindy thing.

... from what I've heard   8)
BKP guitars:
Epiphone Dot Studio (NB bridge, MQ neck)
Gibson LP Studio (MM bridge, CS neck)

I know what you mean, '73 SG here  8)

The pickups in it arent stock, the stock were black mini humbuckers.

I now have Gibson classic '57 paf/ classic plus paf(have alnico II magnet) in it and it sounds dark and woody but still has cutting high mids.

If i would not have those doing nothing i would get a set of stormy mondays or the hotter Mules with alnico II magnet. I have the mules with alnico IV, but they worked out better with 500k pots in an LP and i wanted to keep the original 300k pots in the SG.

Alnico II pickups are the bomb for oldskool grinding, the nice organic kind of grind, they just love gain, also can get very thick and wide if you want it to be.

My '73 SG with (then) raw nickel Mules
Mules in '76 Gibson custom with maple neck.

I pretty much agree.  Nailbombs are only as dark as your amp/speakers....

I was split between the Nailbomb and Painkiller myself... I went with the Nailbomb.
