Original Floyd Rose loose Arm
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:21:42 PM »
Hi guys,  Does anyone know how to make a modification to a trem arm  to make it stay put when you wham and let go.?  In other words,  I want to whammy and have it stay next to my High E string until I push it outta the way.  Right now it's loose as a goose and I have tried wrapping a little plumber's thread tape or a tiny bit of duct tape, but then the arm won't even pop in.   I have a Ibanez s520 Japanese w/ OFR.   Thanks, Lifted

I'm guessing it's one of the FRs that the trem isn't a screw-on?

I'd try using blu-tac. I can't really describe what blu-tac is (in case they don't have it in Florida) cause it'll probably sound dirty. But it's so there's friction and so your trem arm will stay put rather than slide all over the show.

On my Ibanez RGT there are two small grub screws that compress two nylon rings inside the vibrato arm mounting hole. Yours may be similar. If so you can see the top grub screw by fitting the arm all the way into the hole and divebombing the strings, then looking from the rear of the guitar, near the top of the mounting block that is exposed.
One of the allen keys that came with the guitar should fit this. Tighten it till you have the required stiffness in the arm.  The other grub screw is harder to get at. You need to take the spring cavity cover plate off and with the strings loosened off pull the arm back as far as you can and you can just see the bottom screw hole. Tighten that to suit also.

Thanks so much, all you guys.  Yes, 7 that sounds just like my arm with the nylon collars.  I had no Idea there were allen holes where you said.  That should do the trick.  I am so stoked now!  thanks to  all for responding!   Cheers!
