Might have a change of heart on pickup decision
« on: August 19, 2005, 08:34:48 PM »
Hi All,

From my previous posts, I was recommended the nailbomb set.  After speaking to a friend of mine he said, the Gibson SG
Standard I have is a guitar that has been around for a while and loved my many for a reason.  He asks why am I thinking
of putting in pickups that will change the whole point of having an SG.  I could easily put some pedals or set the amp/strings
up differently to get a hardcore punk or nu-metal sound or just go out an buy a cr@ppy guitar to modify.
My guitar currently has the 489R and 489T pickups.  If I was to buy a better SG, it would have come with the 57 humbuckers.

My question is in two parts.  1. Do you agree with his statement and 2. If I were to have 57 humbuckers what BKP's would give
me a sound they would but better?  Could the nailbombs sound just as good as the 57" humbuckers yet still have that energy
saved up to out perform them in the harder sounding music....thanks in advance.

Nailbombs are poles apart from 57 Classic, the nearest we do to thes quite low output PAFalikes is the Stormy Monday.
I'd still stick with an Alnico V magnet though as it really works well with an SG.My advice would be an Alnico V Mule set, slightly hotter than the 57s but an overall similar vibe..............and of course ours are handmade and scatterwound too so will sound alot clearer.

Shag, I agree with Tim on getting the mule. I have two SG's one of them an standart that used to have the same pickups that you have on your git. If you are going to get the best possible pickup on the marked for your guitar get the Mule. That way you would never have to look back and wonder. Get the 500 cts pots and capacitors also.   :)

Don't worry about power with the Mule, it's so dynamic and it'll let you use the amp properly for gain. It's called the Mule because it'll make you work as hard as you work it

Hi LULUSG,

I'm not to brite when it comes to guitar components.
When you say upgrade to 500cts pots and capacitors, do you have a link to each so I could see exactly what you are talking about.

I searched the internet and found this, but am unsure... THANKS!!
