Yeay!
The new Paul Gilbert album is out, "Silence followed by a deafening roar".

And by golly good stuff it is too. After GOOMY he's decided to do another instruMental cd and I'd say it's a lot more mature. His tone is thicker, he mainly used his reverse Icemen(?) one is mahogany with a cherry wood top and DiMarzio PAFs, and the other is korina with single coils, and I presume the Marshall Vintage Modern combo.

So far stands out tracks are 'The Rhino' which is a typical Gilbert rocker but with some Return to Forever era Di Meola hamonies thrown in!
'Norwegian Cowbell' sounds like it could have been on GOOMY but with the addition of Racer X harmonized shredding. 'Bronx 1971' is a dirty funk tune with Paul using a Boss bass synth pedal for the main riff, there's more bluesy funky playing on Paul Vs. Godzilla.
Of course there's the obligatory metal tune, a Costello/Bacharach ballad and a bit of Bach. Not to mention a bit of the old Jimmy Page violin bow trick.

Paul was over here last week doing a short promotional tour and he played some free in-store shows, my missus was lucky enough to go to one of them and sat behind Paul's wife and mother in law. One of the first things she said to me when she came home was "His tone was amazing! Much better than the last album". The show was recorded so we've got the CD-R of that too. Double yeay.

I don't think there's any release date for the CD is the US and Europe yet but I recommend guys in the UK go and see him on tour with Joe Satriani this spring, I'm sure it's going to be amazing.

I eagerly awaiting its release in the rest of the world. I hope he'll put on another extensive headlining tour also.

I love Paul Gilbert's stuff for so many reasons, but I have to say, his solo albums don't really keep me coming back for more these days.
His playing is, of course, superb, but looking back at some of his older videos, it seemed like playing heavier music and having shorter lead sections made him more creative in his approach to soloing instead of falling back on standard pentatonic ideas and repeated 3nps licks.
That said, I can't argue with the creativity of tracks like Three E's For Edward and GOOMY.

I will no doubt buy his album when it comes out, but I expect I won't still be listening to it this time next year. Of course, I hope I'm proved completely wrong with this new album. But what I'm really hoping is that he gets back to playing in a band full-time.

Thing that sets him above the other shredder-types is the fact that he can write some decent songs... plus his cover of 2 Become 1 was awesome. :oops:

Paul has always been my favourite shredder because he doesnt take everything so seriously as the other big ones seem to, his songs are fun.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the guy. He is one of my biggest influences, both musically and for his approach to playing guitar. His love for the instrument is infectious and just watching him play is inspirational.

His songwriting is awesome, but somehow, I just don't find his solo albums particularly compelling.

website is funny stuff....as much as I admire his skills, it is his sense of humor and down to earth personality that win me over every time

I am the same as Shaman-the guy has so much personality and that is almost as impressive as his musical skills.

Here' s a blurry pic of Paul's live pedalboard for anyone who might be interested; there's a Boss tuner, ADA flanger, Keeley looper and Xotic AC booster but I don't know the blue one and can't make out the big white one at all (maybe some kind of EH pedal?).
Anyone fancy taking a guess at what they are?

This picture is on the Racer X forum. It looks like the white pedal is a Fulltone Soul-bender. No idea about the blue pedal though, might be worth posting your pic over there and see what they say.
