It's all a bit wrong.  Can't put my finger on it, but it doesn't stop it from being wrong.  I like quilted maple, I like explorers, obviously not together though.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

long time gone now (except in my house) but the Gibson MIII had 24 frets.

as to the explorer/futura, i quite like it, although i'd prefer it without the quilt top.  is that actually going on sale?

Explorers are very comfortable. Although mine was a bit neck heavy, it was a joy to sit down with it.

That was a typical latter-day day Gibson design - great concept, but they screwed it up with weird cosmetics like the "flint arrowhead" inlays and hideous scratchplate.  :?

I have seen a pic of an M-IV with an ebony board and what looked like a black limba body, that was actually quite stylish.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

i agree that the cosmetics are an, um, acquired taste     although i love the body shape.  great guitars though, i love mine.  and i have a les paul studio lite with the MIII electronics which has a box beside it with a pair of nailbombs in it, just waiting for me to find the time (and courage) to install them.
