Hi everyone,

Just wondering what you guys think of the THD Flexi 50? Odds are I won't go for one, but I wouldn't mind hearing what you think of them, if you've tried them. Just in case. :lol:

I'll not say what I think for fear of biasing the thread...

afaik, they're pretty much based on a 2203/2204 Marshall - heard some bands using them before and they sounded good. never tried one myself though.

Thanks HTH... Yeah, i liked the one I tried, just was wondering what everyone else thought... no idea what it's based on other than they say it's fendery when clean, more marshally when overdriven (only they don't infringe so blatantly on copyrights, haha). i think i'd agree with that based on the one i tried... and the ability to switch tubes at will is pretty cool.

Looks like very few people here have tried them... hopefully someone else around here has tried them...

From all accounts, the build quality is utterly stellar - right up there with the best.

As far as mass produced amps go THD are second to none, in terms of quality of construction.

I tried one and i wasn't particularly impressed with the tone although the valves were microphonic and it was into a poor cab.

I think Hunter used to have a Univalve (ok, it would be easier to list what amps he hasn't had) and although it's different to the Flexi I'm sure there must be some similarities, if he'd care to share.

I'd love to know how good the Univalve and Bivalve are - They look so damn neat!

And apparently they can take ANY valves.

i liked the flexi a lot more than the bivalve when i tried it... though granted the bivalve was a bit old, and the light on the front for the hotplate was a bit wonky, so it might have been in bad nick or something.

I've played all of the THD amps at Matt Uminov in NYC, which is where I purchased my Hot Plate, also.

My take on the THD amplifiers --

They are probably one of the more affordable boutique amps out there. The 50 watter I played didn't really remind me of a Marshall, per se; it was cleaner and had a more open midrange.

Without an OD pedal I wasn't able to really get it to distort and do the 'Twilight Odyssey' thing.

I would definitely rate the amp, and would own one if I had the desire/need for what it does -- chameleon-like amplifier with a wide, flat, tonal response and built-in Hot Plate.

i'd be after it for probably the lower to mid gain type of stuff, as my engl takes care of the heavier stuff.

Still not sure if I'll go for it, but at least if I know what people think, it helps me make a decision. :)

From prior research I reckon these are awesome amps.

I was going to try one as I was looking for an amp with an attenuator, but then I found Matamp and I prefer to buy British etc...

I'm sure they have something in your sound range and the versatillity with the tubes means you could spend years experimenting with sounds NOS tubes etc etc.

thanks ted. the flexi 50 actually doesn't have the attenuator (i don't think so, anyway, but i could be wrong)... it has a switch between50 and 20 watts (at lower plate voltage).

I thought they all had the hotplate built in as standard.

Are you going to gig it? If not do you need 50 w?

nah, no gigging, but i already have a valve junior for the real low wattage stuff (and i preferred the tone of the flexi to the bivalve). i can turn my amps up pretty loud at home when everyone's out though (i've had my engl on 10, and haven't had the cops called yet... :lol: ).

Probably academic as I most likely won't go for one, but figured I might as well ask, just in case. :)

Just downloaded the flexi 50 manual, and it doesn't seem to have a hotplate, by the way. Just to let you know. :)
