I have several Les Pauls with Rebel Yell, Black Dog, Crawler and I had the Cold Sweat but exchanged it for the Crawler. The LPs are different: Standard from the Custom Shop, R68 Custom, and a 71 Deluxe routed for buckers and they all vary in their inherent tone. I have an R4 goldtop with Lollar P90s and a 79 maple neck Custom with god only knows what pickups are in it. I have a love hate relationship with them. But I digress.
I play though a Soldano SLO which is a high gain amp that can be on the bright side if you don't take some time to think outside the box with the tone controls. All that being said ,of these
bridge pickups here I my perceptions. I like a hot 80s 90s rock sound with the pinnacle of tone generally being Steve Stevens.:
Crawler has the smoothest high end of the pups above and , as said all over the the forum, is a beefed up PAF sound. You really can't go wrong with this pup but it's not as distinctive sounding or flavored as some of the other BK humbuckers. That's not a good or bad; just my perception of it.
Cold Sweat seemed to bright or scooped for my needs with my amp; sounded like a better Gibson 57 on steroids. A great pup but not for me.
Rebel Yell are amazing and really shine in a band context; perhaps my favorite albeit not as sweet on the high E & B strings as the Crawler. But it sounds so exciting when you play; the upper mids are like a shot of Redbull...take intravenously. My band goes nuts for this guitar. Steve Stevens is one of my biggest influences and this really gets me close to his tone, especially with 5ths and double not stops.
Black Dog is lower output and nails the tones on BLACK DOG and Jimmy Page which has pluses and minuses, depending on your musical style. It's a great pup for blues and hard rock; it can do metal but that's not it's forte in my opinion.
The Rebel Yell neck pickup is to die for. Period!
My Gibsons; the R4 Custom black beauty was just sold.
