OLP MM1F, real floyd rose?
« Reply #15 on: February 26, 2008, 11:13:44 PM »
If you do find out, could you post in here please? No reason, just I'm curious.

Thanks!

Just to add, the person on another forum who said it had a ping said that the ping was a "P.O.S.". I've heard that some people prefer the ping, but i've also heard that loads think it's nowhere near as good as an OFR.

Obviously not scientific, but i'd be cautious.

Well i've sent the emails just now, lets wait and see if they reply...

I'm wondering now though, the pre-07 model which is easily obtained in the UK is basswood with a maple top, which is what the 'proper' model has.

This one is just a whole basswood body...

Would i be better off buying the older model, and upgrade the floyd rose if it really needs it? i wouldn't be using it a great deal, mostly for light bending or flutter effects and the occasional dive bomb.

Hmmm...

Ping trems are what Dean uses on the import Razorbacks, and people on the Dean forum have no complaints. I find internet polls unreliable, because you get loads of 16 year olds with no real experience of either spouting off third hand brand snobbery about OFRs.

^ i agree, but you also get 16-year olds who haven't tried the real thing (or a quality copy) spouting off about how their lo-trs or edge III is as good as an OFR...  :?

Moral of the story: don't believe anything you read on the internet or forums, unless it's from a known reliable source, or it corroborates what you already know to be true...

A genuine PING should carry the Floyd Rose name NOT the "licensed under" disclaimer..

If it does, it is by all accounts a highly engineered piece of kit made out of high quality metal. Just of Asian origin.

Well the story goes Schaller stoped making them and Floyd Rose went to Ping to make them for a while.

Ping did such a great job that Schaller started making them again, and thus that's why they are the only ones alowed to have the Floyd Rose name without the licensed cr@p.

I think i'd rather be with the underdog on this one...!

i wouldn't risk a cheap floyd, even for the occasional effect. cheap floyds are incredibly depressing things.

^ agreed.

That may be true about ping. I have no idea.

However, the patent ran out on the (original style; i.e. non low-profile) floyds a year or two back. so no original-style licensed floyds are technically licensed any more. I know my gotohs don't say licensed on them.

thanks for letting me know. I wasn't after one anyway, but it's nice to know.

Now, I wonder if those new bc rich 80s gunslingers have ping floyd roses?

might have to shoot them an email. my guess is that laziness will win out, though.

Not hard to send an e-mail, but i'd be pretty sure that they're Ping.

The guy who i received a response from also deals with BC Rich, want me to PM you his email address?

Heres one 16 year old who can safely say the OFR is easily the best of all locking trems (although the PRS one is nothing short of amazing, even if its quite different to a FR and its offspring). :D

^ have you tried a gotoh, schaller, edge, lo-pro edge etc.? i know i'm wary of saying which i like the best, as I haven't tried them all close to enough. EDIT: sorry if that sounded rude, i didn't mean it to be... i'm just used to some other forums where the less people know, the more adamant they are that they're right. i realise that's generally not the case here. :)
