« on: February 23, 2008, 03:23:52 AM »
I don't know if this has been done before or not.  Sorry if it has.
I was curious as to the names of most of the pickups.  After seeing why a few of the pickups were named the way they are, I thought I might be able to find the rest.  Here's what I've been able to come up with.  Any one fill in the blanks?  Are any of them wrong?

Stormy Monday: Song by T-Bone Walker
PG Blues: ???
The Mule: Deep Purple Song
Riff Raff: AC/DC Song

VHII:  Van Halen
Black Dog: Led Zeppelin song
Emerald: Thin Lizzy song
Abraxas: Santana Album?

Holydiver: DIO!!!
Cold Sweat: James Brown song
Miracle Man: Ozzy Osbourne Song
Nailbomb: A band named Nailbomb?
Warpig: Black Sabbath Song
Painkiller: Judas Priest song and album.

Geoff Whitehorn - 'Crawler': The band Geoff Whitehorn plays in
Steve Stevens - 'Rebel Yell':  Billy Idol song

Apache: a 1960 instrumental song originally recorded by The Shadows???
The Sultan's: The Sultans were an American rock and roll band?
Mother's Milk: Red Hot Chili Peppers album

Irish Tour: Rory Gallagher album
Slow Hand: Album by Clapton, also his nickname.

Trilogy Suite: Trilogy Suite song off of Trilogy album by Yngwie Malmsteen
The Sinner: ???

Mississippi Queen: Song by Mountain

Blackguard: ???
Country Boy:  John Denver's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy"  Hank Williams "Country Boy can Survive"?
Yardbird: The band named yardbirds?

Brown Sugar: Rolling Stones song.
The Boss: Nickname of Bruce Springsteen?
Piledriver: Album by Status Quo?

There are a few that I don't know where they came from.  Not sure on all of them though.

Stormy Monday:  Based on Allman Brothers version I think
PG Blues:  Peter Green
The Mule:  Warren Haynes of Government Mule
Cold Sweat:  Thin Lizzy Song
Sultan:  Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits?
Sinner:  Judas Priest song
Piledriver:  The Canadian metal band?

Nailbomb:  The band?
Apache:  ?

The rest I think you got right.  I'm sure somebody will get the rest.  :orcass:

The Nailbomb has something to do with the Brazilian band sepultura as far as i know.

Apache is a song by the band The Shadows. Hank Marvin the guitarist there and he is credited with buying the first ever Fender Strat in the UK. It was a Salmon Pink one. God I'm tuning into a geek!
Warpig, MQ,
Miracle Man-Trilogy Suite, Cold Sweats, Black Guards, Rebel Yells & Irish Tours!

I've always assumed the Blackguard is named after the original blonde Telecasters with black pickguards...

Nailbomb is the offshoot band by Max Cavalera from Sepultura

Max from Sepultura & Alex Newport from Fudge Tunnel, with various guest appearences (Dino Cazares from Fear Factory amongst others IIRC).

They released one studio album "Point Blank" (very good BTW), & a live album "Proud to commit commercial suicide" (not so good, a live recording from one of their few live performances at Dynamo festival)

Sorry to be such an anorak :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

PG Blues = Peter Green - in particular a reference to his famous Les Paul (that Gary Moore later owned, now at some US collector for >$1M), whose neck pickup had its pole pieces reversed for "out of phase" tones (don't quite understand the precise technical details, perhaps someone else could help out here? :)).  Basically the PG Blues set has the same thing.

I had always assumed that "Country Boy" was a reference to Albert Lee's party piece? Not sure I associate John Denver with Telecaster shenanigans...
